The pandemic has taken a toll on all of us in various aspects of our lives and for many, the effects are physical. Filipino actor Gabbi Garcia shed light on this issue in a recent tweet of hers calling out body shamers. The 22-year-old began her statement by listing down the phrases that have been thrown at her: "Ang taba mo," she writes. "Chubby ka na," and perhaps the worst one: "Buntis ka ba?"

In exasperation, she asked her fans and followers, "Can we all stop and take a break from body shaming?" She finished off the rather heated tweet with a GIF of Gordon Ramsay looking about as frustrated as rude comments about weight can make anyone feel.
But Garcia wasn't done yet. "Bawal tumaba at mag-stress eat ng lockdown?" she asks. "Bawal maging bloated? Kailangan beach body forever?" Echoing Nadine Lustre's famous "come on guys, it's 2017" statement, she ended her tweet with a call for growth, encouraging fans to reject outdated ideals about body image. "Grabe anong petsa na, guys, character development naman tayo diyan," she writes.
Garcia has been vocal about body image for years now. In 2019, she answered a question from an Instagram follower who asked if she had any stretch marks, saying, "You're not alone. Hindi kabawasan ng pagiging babae mo ang pagkakaroon ng stretch marks." Garcia even encouraged other women to "go wear that swimsuit and flaunt your body" despite visible physical imperfections.
In 2020, she also spoke about her insecurities growing up morena. In an interview with photographer BJ Pascual, Garcia shared that she lost many commercial auditions to lighter-skinned models: "I was so insecure when I was a kid kasi laging yong mga kinukuha, yong mga may lahi," she recalls. Her views changed when she entered showbiz in high school where she made it a point to never lighten her skin for any role or work opportunity: "Sabi ko, 'I will not change my skin color. I will love my skin.
