(SPOT.ph) Hectic as work days can be, there's value in dreaming about the more laid-back and leisurely times that lie ahead. Heck, imagine leaving all your worries behind, sitting back, and diving into a hefty, juicy burger! When in Cebu, one under-the-radar spot lets you do just that in a cool al-fresco setting with plenty of fresh air to keep you company. Check out Sal's, a small shop in Mabolo that's known for their stellar takes on diner-style eats—namely burgers, tacos, and hot dogs.
Here's the deal on this small shop that serves great burgers in Cebu:
Owner Mikel Sala originally worked in finance in Manila, but did a 180-degree shift as he decided to go the culinary route. He moved back to his hometown of Cebu and entered the International School for Culinary Arts and Hotel Management International School in the area, before working the kitchens of Kayu Kitchen + Bar. He opened Sal's in 2018, serving food to go with the beers of their neighbor, Turning Wheels Craft Brewery.
Sal's has a small store front with a few indoor seats (though indoor dine-in is currently on hold in the area), as well as outdoor seats where you can chill out to their hearty grub. Their menu is short but sweet, by design. "I try to maintain a lean and simple menu where, in my opinion, everything tastes good," Sala shares. "I'm not going to put an item on the menu just for the sake of having it."
The House Burger (P200) is a great place to start, as it features a simple combo of parts that are individually excellent and make for a stellar whole: Think juicy patties, soft buns, slightly-sweet ketchup, tangy mustard, and vibrant house-made pickles that even out the burger's richer aspects. If you must have your cheese, go for the Cheeseburger (P220)—essentially the House Burger with cheese for an extra gooey bite—or the Cheeseburger Deluxe (P230), which also gets a drizzle of spicy mayo for a welcome kick.
Hot dogs are another meaty classic, and you'll want to try Sal's Chili Cheese Dog (P200), which brings together a pork hotdog, their feisty homemade chili, and gooey torched cheese on a warm bun. For tacos, you can't miss the Pork Pibil (P200/four pieces), which features pork that's slow-simmered with spices until fork-tender, then served with zesty chimichurri and pickled onions. And if seafood is your protein of choice, try the Shrimp Taco (P220/two pieces) with crispy battered shrimp, spicy mayo, and a good helping of chimichurri for extra vigor.
