Turns Out They Like Chickenjoy in the Gundam Universe

(SPOT.ph) Mecha anime have played a big part in the lives of Pinoy kids since the '70s (who can forget the sudden disappearance of Voltes V?)—and one title has given us a new reason to feel at home (literally). Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway just took Davao and turned it into a futuristic setting! The mecha film is first in a trilogy from Netflix. There's definitely something about seeing a certain fast-food chain in an anime—both huge childhood-making factors—that hits different.

Here's What You Should Know About the Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway on Netflix:

Gundam has been around since 1979. The franchise is built upon the OG TV series about well, the Gundam (Read: huge robots piloted by humans in a new age). The newest film is set during U.C. 0105—U.C. standing for "Universal Century," the Gundam world's timeline—and most of the movie's events happen in a fictional and futuristic Davao.

You can spot everything from the usual roadside market scenes to the incredibly hard-to-miss happy bee. All in cool anime style. The lead character, Hathaway Noah (a.k.a. Mafty in the film's events) and friends even make a pitstop at the popular fast-food chain—and the anime is in no way subtle about it. Best part? They got all the little details right. From the mascot to the packaging, and of course the chosen food—ChickenJoy supremacy, indeed!—it is loaded with fun little bits for the Pinoy fan, or really, just anybody who loves the now-global brand.

The newest movie picks up 12 years after Char's Counterattack, which IRL, was released way back in 1988. It has definitely been a long time coming. The Mobile Suit Gundam series is arguably one of the biggest animes out there, not just in terms of mecha, so we're glad we got some representation in the canon. BRB while we wait for the release dates of the next two movies!
