(SPOT.ph) In David Attenborough's newest Netflix documentary Breaking Boundaries: The Science of Our Planet, he and a team of scientists explain that most of the Earth's indicator of stability are already at a critical level. We're near the point of no return when it comes to carbon emission and waste pollution, and we have only the next decade to turn things around. In an effort to play their part in solving this global climate crisis issue, Bonifacio Global City in Taguig is focusing on lessening carbon emission, reducing and recycling plastic waste, and championing sustainable initiatives.
In 2020, they successfully cut carbon emission down to 37% and offset about 62% of greenhouse gases. This is because most of their street lights and buildings use renewable energy source. Up to 70% of their office buildings are recognized as green buildings by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, Building for Ecologically Responsive Design Excellence, and WELL.
BGC also encourages biking and walking, especially with their pedestrian-friendly streets and network of Personal Mobility Device (PMD) lanes for bikers and e-scooter users. By the end of 2020, there are at least 5,000 PMD users daily, which is significantly higher than their record of 500 daily bikers pre-pandemic.
For waste management, BGC collects about 400 kilograms of plastic waste a month. But instead of bringing these to Metro Manila's open landfills, the collected plastics are recycled into ecobricks through a partnership with Green Antz Builders. This eco-conscious construction company based in Plaridel, Bulacan takes ecobricks to the next level by making actual bricks from shredded plastic and wet cement. Each brick uses around 100 single-use plastic sachets and is reported to be five times stronger than regular hollow blocks, and costs less on a per square meter basis.
Their newest initiative is the the BGC Urban Farm at 5th Avenue. Residents can adopt a hub and grow fresh produce themselves for their own homes or for partner communities. Hubs, so far, have herbs such as basil and dill that are perfect for homecooks.
All these projects are aligned with Taguig's objective to decrease residuals by 2022 as well as the United Nations' commitment to further reduce carbon emissions.
