The New Instax Mini 40 Camera Is All About That Old-School Aesthetic

(SPOT.ph) Despite the fact that you can conveniently capture any memory in a digital photo with just a tap on your smartphone, there's a certain appeal to the art of analog photography. Film cameras and instant-print point-and-shoots make the process a little more labor-intensive, but also more spontaneous. Film photography allow you to preserve special memories, but frees you from having to take multiple pics to get the perfect shot or edit your snaps with filters, color correction, and so on. If you're thinking about getting your own in order to better document the best moments in your life, here's a new device to check out: Fujifilm's latest addition to their line of instant-print cameras, the Instax Mini 40!

The first thing you'll notice about the Instax Mini 40 is its vintage-inspired design—it sports a textured leather finish with metallic silver accents, channeling classic analog cameras. As with many of the devices in the Instax lineup, the device supports mini-format film, which results in photographs measuring about 1.8 by 2.4 inches with a white frame around each, making your snapshots look more like precious keepsakes.

But just because the device takes inspiration from old-schools tech designs, that doesn't mean it hasn't been updated to meet the modern needs of the social media age—its most notable feature is the easy-to-use Selfie Mode. It makes taking selfies (the same way you would on your phone’s front camera) easier thanks to the mirror upfront that lets you properly frame your shot. It also promises to make up-close shots sharper and more focused. To activate Selfie Mode, just pull out the front edge of the camera lens after turning the device on and snap away!

The Instax Mini 40 was released along with Fujifilm's new Contact Sheet mini-format Instax film, which complement's the camera's retro look perfectly. Each film sheet features a black frame with orange text, adding an vintage feel to each of your snapshots. The design simulates an actual contact sheet used in analog photography. For those of you born in the digital age, that's a bromide sheet printed with all the negatives from a roll of film, made to review individual images from a single roll.
