(SPOT.ph) If you ever have four hours to spare—or just need to warm your cold, dead heart—we recommend streaming both Four Sisters and a Wedding and Four Sisters Before the Wedding. Yup, that’s all the time you need to go through both unforgettable movies about the Salazar sisters! The pop-culture staple Four Sisters and a Wedding, which we’re calling FSAAW for purposes of this article (It’s a long title, okay), came out in 2013 while the prequel, Four Sisters Before the Wedding (FSBTW), came out in 2020.

While it took nearly a decade for any other movie that dared match up to the OG, we have to say it was worth the wait. We couldn’t resist a good old smackdown with both movies up on Netflix! Beware of spoilers.

You have two hours to spare, which Four Sisters movie should you watch?

Plot

Need a refresher? Here goes. The OG 2013 flick revolved around four sisters—former absolute besties—who all come home when their brother, the bunso, announces that he is getting married. With two weeks to the wedding date, they get to scheming to foil it as they believe their brother is making a mistake. Turns out the real problem wasn’t the upcoming wedding—it was them and their rocky relationships all along.

The prequel, FSBTW, takes us back to the teenage years of the Salazar siblings. Their parents' marriage is on the edge of collapse and the four well-meaning but misguided sisters take it upon themselves to save it. While the OG definitely stands on its own, the prequel gave us a more solid foundation for all the characters and why they are who they are. Plus, who wouldn’t want more of the crazy Salazar family?

Winner: Both stories had that mix of comedy and drama we couldn’t get enough of, but the OG will always hold a special place in our hearts. Also, we're happy they worked it out, but that cheating arc was too easily forgotten about in FSBTW.

Quotable Quotes

Look, the fact that FSAAW has become an absolute treasure trove of memes just points to the clear winner of this round. But you know what, we’ll list down a few of the best quotes from both movies just because we want to—and because we know you want it, too. Both of them had an excellent mix of hilarious and hard-hitting dialogue. We know you still cry at the confrontation scenes, even on your nth watch.

Four Sisters and a Wedding

Bigyan ng options! Options! Options! Options!”

Teddie (Toni Gonzaga) when she came up with the first of her, erm, questionable plans to stop Rebreb (Enchong Dee) and Princess’s (Angeline Quinto) wedding.

"Sorry din ha.. Kasi sa sobrang sakit ng naramdaman ko, nahirapan akong makita na nasasaktan ka rin pala. I’m sorry."

Bobbie (favorite ni Alex, played by Bea Alonzo) when she and Alex (favorite ni papa, Angel Locsin) finally learned to understand each other in front of that wall of achievements. Anyone else tempted to start up some drama just to use that "Don't give comments about my personal life because I don't give comments about yours!" line IRL?

“Ma, I’m sorry, Ma!”

Oh, you know this one.

Pero bakit kasalanan ko, parang kasalanan ko?

Bobbie saying what everyone feels sometimes.

"I’m a grown-up now, making grown-up decisions."

Rebreb telling his sisters to back off after he finds out they’re scheming to stop his wedding. Also us whenever we have sweets for dinner.

Four Sisters Before the Wedding

“You can’t date until you graduate, diploma muna bago jowa.”

The Salazar family motto—we mean, rule.

“Pera! Pera! Pera! Tsaka jowa! Jowa! Jowa!”

Young Teddie (Charlie Dizon) and friends manifesting good mojo for the things they want most. We agree with their priorities.

“Pwede ba wag ka masyado maging mabait sa akin? Pwede ba maging g*** ka muna? Para hindi kita magustuhan. Para mawala na 'yong sakit na nararamdaman ko.

We don’t recall being anywhere this eloquent as teenagers but aspiring filmmaker Alex (Gillian Vicencio) shot an arrow straight into our hearts with this banger of a breakup line. Wait, they were never even together. Ouch-er.

Winner:

It’s not a quote but we think it perfectly encapsulates why FSAAW has more unforgettable moments.

We also loved how the two movies incorporated the sisters’ “taglines.” Think “Pinaganda mo pa,” and funnily enough, even charades popped up in both.

Best Acting

This one is bound to get some opinions. Teddie, Bobbie, Alex, and Gabbie were originally played by Toni Gonzaga, Bea Alonzo, Angel Locsin, and Shaina Magdayao, respectively, so you know the younger versions had massive shoes to fill. Still, Charlie Dizon, Alexa Ilacad, Gillian Vicencio, and Belle Mariano stepped up to the plate.

It wouldn’t make sense to list down the times both casts slayed a scene because that would just be both movies in their entirety. Still, there are scenes in each one that just stood out (Read: all of those dang confrontation scenes that had us sobbing).

FSBTW had all those scenes with each sister confronting their potential romantic interests. Anyone else just feel Teddie’s insecurities? And of course that epic scream fest in the parking lot with poor Gabbie looking like she might burst. We’re a little sad we didn’t see veteran actors Dominic Ochoa and Carmina Villaroel (Caloy and Grace) fight it out as the Salazar parents but hey, at least we got that heartwarming make-up scene.

Where do we even begin with FSAAW? Even that hilarious scene at the Bayag family’s spa is unforgettable. From the tense family meals, the sisters and Rebreb at the swing, basically all the times Alex and Bobbie even so much as looked at each other, to Connie Reyes’ power move as she walked in on her daughters’ squabble and she dropped her bag on the couch like a judge and their gavel—we felt all of that. Most especially, we related to practically all the characters during the biggest confrontation scene of all, when Teddie finally reveals the true nature of her work in Spain. Add that touching makeup scene between Alex and Bobbie, played to a tee by Locsin and Alonzo, and you’ve got yourself a winner.

Winner: FSAAW.

The Feels

Both movies had us laughing or sobbing—sometimes at the same time—throughout. But the moment Teddie kneels down and wails “Ma, I’m sorry, Ma!” in FSAAW, we just lose it. The waterworks turn into a full-on waterfall as her insecurities come rushing out and suddenly it’s Bobbie’s turn to 'fess up. When the normally stoic Bobbie’s tears begin to fall and she recounts all the ways she has never been her parents’ favorite—and turns out she was Alex’s, for an added layer to the story—the dagger in our hearts twists all the way. Whether you have siblings or not, this confrontation scene with their mother will get to you. This particular scene stands out as the defining moment for both the movies.
