The Bulacan-Manila Train Line Is Set to Start Partial Operations This Year

(SPOT.ph) We might just be able to ride a new train line this year! The Philippine National Railways Clark Phase 1 line—which will connect Tutuban, Manila, and Malolos, Bulacan—is prepping to start partial operability by the last months of 2021. This is according to Junn Magno, Philippine National Railways (PNR) General Manager, during a press briefing.

"'Yong PNR Clark Phase 1 po natin, ‘yong Tutuban to Malolos ay ongoing na po ang construction, 43% na po ang progress natin as of January 2021. Partially operable na po ito by the fourth quarter of 2021," he was quoted as saying by the Department of Transportation. Full operations is slated for the second quarter of 2024, he added, though he did not specify which stations would be in operation by then.

Here's What You Should Know About the PNR Clark Phase 1

This upcoming train line will span 38 kilometers to connect Manila and Bulacan. Travel time between the two main hubs of Tutuban and Malolos will ideally be cut down from 1 hour and 30 minutes to just 35 minutes with the PNR Clark Phase 1. It is projected to ferry around 330,000 passengers daily.

We know what you're thinking: Why is it called "phase 1"? This train line is a segment of the much bigger North South Commuter Railway, a massive project that aims to connect Calamba, Laguna, to the New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac. That's around 150 kilometers or so worth of train tracks.

Construction on the second segment, the PNR Clark Phase 2 is currently ongoing as well. This segment will run Malolos to the Clark International Airport, touted as the country's "first airport express." Once complete, Magno explained that you could go from Makati City to the Clark International Airport in about an hour via the train line.

PNR Clark Phase 2 is 27.79% complete as of January. The 54-kilometer stretch is slated for partial operability by 2023 and full operations by 2024 as well, same time as the first segment. Groundbreaking for the last phase, which will span 54.6 kilometers from Tutuban to Calamba, is scheduled for mid-2021.
