(SPOT.ph) Finally, the Common Station is taking shape! The Department of Transportation declared its overall progress at 48.48% for the central train station in Quezon City today, March 24. And while it may have taken seven years to get to this point, the transport authority is confident the project will be finished in time for December 2021—yup, this same year.
What You Should Know About the Common Station Metro Manila
Officially dubbed the Unified Grand Central Station, it will connect a total of four train lines: first, the existing Metro Rail Transit Line 3 and the Light Rail Transit Line 1, and eventually the Metro Rail Transit Line 7 and the Metro Manila Subway.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) posted progress pictures of the massive structure at the corner of North Avenue and EDSA, courtesy of Jane Deocampo. You can spot the previously finished structures, as well as work on the "concourse area" where the train lines will meet right at the corner of two thoroughfares. This area will measure around 13,700 square meters and will serve to "seamlessly interconnect" the four major train lines, said the DOTr.
"This is a long overdue transport infrastructure project that would have considerably eased mobility of commuters in Metro Manila, particularly along the main transit routes, from Baclaran to Monumento to the entire length of EDSA," noted the department. This link will also help folks heading up north to Bulacan and all the way south to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport with the completion of the Metro Manila Subway.
Area B, one of the massive halls that will facilitate the around 478,000 folks expected to move daily through the Common Station, was deemed 96% complete in December of 2019.
Now that they're nearing the halfway mark, the DOTr stated that it will continue at an "accelerated construction pace" 24/7 to meet the deadline.
