(SPOT.ph) Kaybiang Tunnel along the Nasugbu-Ternate Highway in Maragondon, Cavite, is a landmark among motorcycle riders, bikers, and just about everyone on a weekend getaway near Manila. Known as the Philippines' longest subterranean road tunnel, the 300-meter underpass under Mt. Pico de Loro makes for cool photos especially with the pitch-black hole surrounded by the mountains' verdant terrain. Pop-up cafés have also started setting up along the highway, serving as stopovers for cyclists on a long ride. But this popularity also resulted in traffic jams in the vicinity, which is why Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla announced that Kaybiang Tunnel is "strictly [a] no tourism zone" starting on Friday, March 19.
"Marami ang nag-report sa aking tanggapan na ang Kaybiang Tunnel sa Mt. Pico de Loro ay nagiging sanhi ng traffic, basura, at umabot pa sa mga lokal na turista ang sila-silang nagba-bardagulan doon. Buong magdamag ay libo-libong bisikleta, motorsiklo, at sasakyan ang nakaparada, kumakain, nagliliwaliw at lahat ay tumitigil para mag-selfie o mag-picture-taking doon," Remulla said in a Facebook post on March 17, 4 a.m.
The following rules are to be implemented, according to his post:
- No parking in the vicinity of the Kaybiang Tunnel.
- No bike-riders using the tunnel for leisure purposes.
- No eating in the vicinity of the tunnel.
- No selfies in the vicinity of the tunnel.
- No loitering in the vicinity of the tunnel.
- Bawal ang bumusina sa loob ng tunnel.
The Philippine National Police will put checkpoints in Tanza, Naic, Maragondon, and Ternate to ensure adherance to the guidelines. Remulla also reminded the public that "staying in is the new going out," especially with the recent surge of COVID-19 cases in the country.
