(SPOT.ph) The year 2020 threw a huge curveball for art galleries and museums. The crowd-gathering indoor spaces temporarily closed during the community quarantine, forcing them to adapt and shift to the digital platform through virtual exhibitions. But now that things are slowly going back to normal (or as they always say, the "new normal"), most galleries have reopened to visitors who book an appointment in advance.

The Real H.R. Ocampo
If you missed The Real H.R. Ocampo from the Paulino and Hetty Que Collection in 2013, then this is your chance to check out works by the modernist and National Artist Hernando Ruiz Ocampo right from the comfort of your home. The virtual exhibit features 51 paintings, works on paper, and drawings that trace the artist's journey from social realism in the 1930s to abstracts before his death. Aside from viewing the works online, you can also sign up for a virtual guided tour by senior curator Kenneth Esguerra on March 6 and a virtual lecture by Karen Flores on April 24.

Fire Shrine
Illustrator, designer, and painter Tof Zapanta presents his latest works at popular Poblacion hangout Futur:st, which is Today x Future's sister bar in Makati. Much like Jer Dee's solo show Tempest in February, Zapanta ponders his own artistic journey during the quarantine through his signature style of abstractions. Aside from checking out Fire Shrine at the restaurant-slash-gallery, you can also log on to Futur:st's website to buy unframed or framed prints, sticker sets, postcards, and other reproductions of the artist's collection.

Impression Expression
Markus Jentes presents his fourth show at Altro Mondo Arte Contemporanea titled Impression Expression, which showcases his distinct style of shapes and patterns shown with a vibrant color palette. Some of his canvases, which are aptly titled "Summer's End," "Oxide's Return," and "Desire's Horizon," depict much-needed calmness. Aside from an exhibit at Altro Mondo's Makati outpost, you can also check out their virtual gallery on Kunstmatrix.

Safe Space
Nika Dizon's solo show features a large table and glass cabinet filled with cakes, popsicles, and lollipops—all plaster and resin, of course. But take a closer look, and you can see images of razor blades and sharp knives depicting how capitalism relies heavily on making things bright and beautiful. You can check out Safe Space either at Kaida Contemporary's gallery or through their virtual space on Artsteps.

Artist Isko Andrade's solo show looks into his childhood memory being raised by a single mother. He articulates his personal narrative through hyperrealistic oil paintings of clothing items of the women in his life.

The Shelf Life of Being
Buen Abrigo, Marlon Hacla, Cian Dayrit, Ian Carlo Jaucian, Kat Medina, Leslie de Chavez, Likha Camcho, Liv Vinluan, Nathalie Dagmang, Pam Quinto, Poeleen Alvarez, Renz Baluyot, and Rocky Cajigan come together in a group exhibit at MONO8 as they examine their respective states in their artistic journey. Installations show personal artifacts, unfinished works, and selected objects from their own studios and workshops.

Transformatika
In Transformatika, Nasser Zulueta and TomRuss show their narratives of transformation as artists. For Zulueta, this means revealing how he was pushed towards independence early on in his life and how this shaped his bold and spontaneous style in his illustrations and paintings. TomRuss, on the other hand, touches on themes of displacement and injustices experienced by the people of Mindanao vis-a-vis his own story of solitude.

Poklong Anading compares and contrasts the natural and artificial, the organic and synthetic amid current environmental issues. He examines society's obsession to "go back to nature," which is actually a complex concept layered with discourses on space, class, and structures.

The Mechanics of a Twittering Machine
In The Mechanics of a Twittering Machine, Cabanatuan City-based artist Gromyko Semper takes inspiration from Paul Klee’s painting "The Twittering Machine." He uses the German artist's most recognizable elements of loosely sketched birds and hand-crank gadgetry and juxtaposes this with his signature style of odd characters from history, scribbles, and surprising color combinations.

Proto/Para: Rethinking Curatorial Work
Proto/Para: Rethinking Curatorial Work presents the curatorial projects of Jael Mendoza, Sam Domingo, Jeckree Mission, Carla Gamalinda, and Marz Aglipay from the recently concluded Curatorial Development Workshop. Each exhibit tackles current issues about curatorial work, especially amid the pandemic when artist production is disrupted, international fellowships and residencies are postponed, and physical interaction is limited.
