Joaquin's play chronicles the turbulent times of the 1940s as Manila transitions between two colonizers, the Spanish and the Americans. In Intramuros, the Marasigan sisters, Candida and Paula, are caught in this shift as their father the painter Don Lorenzo Marasigan suffers from an artistic draught—pushing the family into financial strain. The play was adapted into a film in 1965 with Lamberto V. Avellana as director.
The digital screening is in honor of Naty Crame-Rogers who passed away on Monday, February 2, at 98 years old. The theater giant portrayed Paula in the movie adaptation; she was considered one of the last grand dames of the golden age of Philippine theater. Crame-Rogers was also nominated for the title of National Artist in the 1990s.
Casa Grande streams classic Filipino films regularly. Kisapmata, another movie based on a Nick Joaquin work and this time directed by Mike de Leon, was put online in December 2020. The opportunity to stream restored versions of classic films comes by pretty rarely so best mark your calendars for this one!
