(SPOT.ph) While the Internet seems to be a boundless repository of information, nothing beats browsing books in a library, opening yellowed-up pages, and having the satisfaction of finding what you've been looking for. Plus, silence is the number-one rule at these places so you don't have to worry about any kind of disturbance (e.g. your neighbor's rooster) while you're working on your graduate thesis or even just doing some leisure reading. If you're looking to leave your work station at home for a day for some peace and quiet, the reading room of the National Library of the Philippines in Manila City has finally reopened following months of closure due to the pandemic. It is open from Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. only.

Use of the library is still free. The "repository of the printed and recorded cultural heritage of the country" waived their P100-library card back in August 2016.

With the reopening of the National Library of the Philippines (NLP), visitors are advised to follow these guidelines and health protocols:

  1. Book an appointment through bit.ly/nlp-online-appointment. Reservations are on a first-come-first-served basis.
  2. Fill out the NLP Health Declaration Form.
  3. Upon confirmation of appointment, you will be given your Library User Reservation Code and seat number.
  4. Browse the NLP Online Public Access Catalog before your scheduled visit to identify and check the availability of the reading materials that you need.

The following precautionary measures are implemented:

  • Wear your face masks and face shields.
  • Disinfect your shoes using the sanitizing mats at the entrance.
  • Have your body temperature checked.
  • Maintain physical distancing, frequent hand washing, and respiratory etiquette.
  • Library users can only use the toilet at the designated floor.
  • Take note of signage and floor markers.

The National Library of the Philippines is at T.M. Kalaw Street, Ermita, Manila City. The reading room is open from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For updates, follow National Library of the Philippines on Facebook. Library users are required to reserve a slot.
