(SPOT.ph) Not all libraries are located in universities. A good number of small libraries in the Metro are open to everyone, whether you're a student just trying to get through grad school or someone who just wants to pick up a rare book about the Philippines. Ortigas Foundation Library, which boasts a collection of over 23,000 books, serials, images, and documents about Philippine history with some dating as far back as 17th century, is moving out of Ortigas Building in Pasig City. They're transferring their outpost to Greenhills Mall in San Juan.

The library's collection is mostly from the personal shelves of Raffa Ortigas, Francisco Ortigas Jr., and Maritoni Ortigas. The Ortigas clan is one of the most influential families in the Philippines with Francisco "Don Paco" Ortigas (1875-1935) as the family patriarch. In the 1930s, Don Paco purchased the Hacienda de Mandaloyon, which is a 4,033-hectare property that spans the cities of San Juan, Pasig, and Quezon City. Ortigas Avenue was named after him, while Julia Vargas in Ortigas Center was name for his wife.

"When I started at the Library close to a decade ago, I enjoyed sneaking from my desk to the library innards and there pull out books, enthralled by the printing craft several hundred years ago, at a time when animal skin were used as covers and pages were made from mulberry taught to us by Chinese with vivacious illustrations laboriously etched by our early Filipino printers," wrote Ortigas Foundation Library's executive director John Silva about their big move. Now packing tens of thousands of these tomes, "the rare books are coming out of shelves and before they are bubble wrapped and gently placed in boxes, I see them again, sheath in plastic, marvelous and pristine as ever," he added.

Silva said that the library will be open to the public come May, barring quarantine restrictions of course. The new location will be at the northwest section of Greenhills Mall. Until then, you can order souvenir items through their social media page.
