(SPOT.ph) In April of 2020, GQ proclaimed that "we are living in the age of sweatpants and never going back." Amidst the pandemic and the ensuing quarantine (a period we have yet to surpass), comfort has become as important as aesthetic. With nearly everyone in Manila regularly working from home, the main preference in everyday fashion has moved toward breathable loungewear and flexible athleisure. In this day and age, sweatpants have become a staple.
The late fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld once sneered that "Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants." Certainly, we've all lost control of our lives, but rather than being a sign of defeat, sweatpants have become the choice pick for the productivity-obsessed. They can now be worn to almost every meeting and "office" since remote working has become prevalent. They can take you from bed to your home office desk to your outdoor workout, requiring no time in between for an outfit change. It seems only fitting that activewear giant Nike, a leader in the athleisure industry, would revamp their Sportswear Pants in a chic new look perfect for the work-from-home era.
“This is how athleisure has carved out the space between exercise apparel and fashion: the former category optimizes your performance, the latter optimizes your appearance, and athleisure does both simultaneously," writes Jia Tolentino in her bestselling collection of essays, Trick Mirror. And well, she's not wrong. Nike takes this philosophy and applies it to their famous sweatpants, revamping the style in French terry fabric made from a blend of recycled and organic materials. The pants feature the same stretchy waist band and loose fit you would normally expect from a pair of joggers, but they're made more stylish with a wide leg cut that's both form-flattering and oh-so cozy. You can cop them in three colors, but we can't wait till Nike releases even more!
