Drop Julie Andrews into the mix and you've got Bridgerton, an upcoming Netflix series that's sure to be your next great binge-watch. The show drops right on Christmas Day, December 25. You guessed it, we're getting an all-seeing and mysterious columnist by the name of Lady Whistledown—voiced by none other than Dame Julie Andrews herself. The fact that this legendary figure would lend her voice to this production signals that it certainly won't be your ordinary drama.
All garbed up in bright period clothes from what looks to be the romantic Regency era, Bridgerton follows the tales of the powerful Bridgerton family. Their eldest daughter, Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) is making her debut into the highly competitive high society marriage market—only the scandal sheet of Lady Whistledown appears to have it in for her, casting aspersions after aspersions.
Enter the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), the type of good-looking guy books refer to as a a rougish rake, or was it rakish rogue? Either apply to this rebellious young man, who, of course, is strangely attracted to the innocent Daphne. But in the Bridgerton world, attraction is never a simple story, hence the need for Lady Whistledown and her deep knowledge of high society's scandals.
Julia Quinn's Bridgerton Series
Before you dive into the Shondaland-produced series—yes, as in Shonda Rhimes' production company—we take it back to its origins. The show is an adaptation of the first book from the popular Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn. You might remember those types of books you definitely should not have read in high school but probably did? Well, this book series is definitely one of them.
The first book is entitled The Duke and I and yes, it is every bit as steamy as you expect—with an enthralling story to back it up. In the first book, Simon Bassett, a.k.a. the Duke of Hastings, and Daphne are actually in cahoots; they pretend to be in love to get their marriage-happy mothers off their back. And as you can tell, that plan backfires in the best way possible.
The rest of the series sees almost each of the Bridgerton siblings entangled in their own highly convoluted and totally sexy love lives—something we definitely can't wait to see in the live adaptation! And before you compare Lady Whistledown to another beloved-high society-and-their-scandals series, just know that the first Bridgerton book was published in 2000, long before Gossip Girl dropped her Xs and Os on us.
