Intruder: unrated director’s cut of Scott Spiegel’s 1989 slasher is coming to theatres

Grindhouse Releasing is bringing Intruder, late writer/director Scott Spiegel’s 1989 supermarket slasher, to theatres this holiday season. The release will give horror fans the opportunity to see the film in its unrated director’s cut, featuring the graphic gore effects from KNB EFX Group that were trimmed to secure an R rating.

Spiegel, who co-wrote Evil Dead II with Sam Raimi, made his feature directorial debut with Intruder, a slasher that turns a grocery store into a hunting ground for a homicidal maniac. Originally titled The Night Crew, the film was written by Spiegel from a story he developed with producer Lawrence Bender (Pulp Fiction).

Here’s the synopsis: It’s 10 pm and the employees of Michigan’s Walnut Lake Supermarket are in for a really bad night. The place is shutting its doors for good, and the night crew has a long shift ahead of them… longer than they think! The lovely check-out girl has a deranged ex-boyfriend, the store’s phone lines are cut, and the employees start dying in the most stomach-churning ways imaginable. A deranged killer is on the loose in the grocery store! Can anyone stop this murderous intruder?

The cast includes Elizabeth Cox, Renée Estevez, Danny Hicks, David Byrnes, Eugene Glazer, Billy Marti, Burr Steers, Craig Stark, Ted Raimi, Sam Raimi, Alvy Moore, and Bruce Campbell. Green Acres stars Alvy Moore and Tom Lester also appear, along with Three Stooges regular Emil Sitka.

Intruder arrived at the end of the 1980s slasher boom, but it marked an important early showcase for KNB EFX Group. The special effects company, founded by Robert Kurtzman, Greg Nicotero, and Howard Berger, would go on to become one of the industry’s leading names in practical makeup and gore effects, with credits that include The Walking Dead.

Grindhouse Releasing owner Bob Murawski provided the following statement:

“Scott was a longtime friend and a super-talented screenwriter and filmmaker. I’ve always wanted to do something with INTRUDER. It’s an underrated and underseen film that literally delivers the groceries. Scott’s unrated director’s cut of INTRUDER never got a theatrical release. We are proud to be partnering with Charles Band and Full Moon Features to present INTRUDER on the big screen where it belongs.”

The theatrical release begins this holiday season, with Intruder scheduled to play select arthouse theatres across the United States and Canada. Specific theatres and screening dates have not yet been announced.

Intruder is one of my all-time favorites, so I’m very glad to hear that the director’s cut is going to be getting some theatrical play soon. Are you interested in catching this one on the big screen? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
