On the JoBlo Movies YouTube channel, we will be posting one full movie every day of the week, giving viewers the chance to watch them entirely free of charge. Today’s Free Movie of the Day is a sci-fi thriller with a dose of comedy and a knock-off Freddy Krueger-type running around to bring some attempts at scares along the way. The movie is called Portal Runner, and no, it doesn’t have anything to do with the 2001 video game of the same title.
Coming to us from director Cornelia DuryƩe, who was working from a script crafted by her assistant J.D. Henning and her son Tallis Moore, Portal Runner tells the following story:
15 year old Nolan is blessed with the ability to travel to parallel worlds– and cursed to be chased through them by a monstrous Evil. When he gets stuck in a parallel world, with a sister he’s never met, he must make allies and dig deep to destroy the creature– before it destroys him.
The film stars Sloane Morgan Siegel, Brian S. Lewis, Carol Roscoe, Matt Shimkus, Denny McAuliffe, Shaunyce Omar, Roy Luke, and Elise Eberle, who viewers may recognize from the TV shows Salem and Shameless. Or from the Silversun Pickups music video “Dots and Dashes (Enough Already)”, which is where she received the scar on her face. A piece of camera equipment fell on her while she was filming that video. Don’t think I’m rude for mentioning the scar, as Eberle is actually quite proud of it. She wanted to keep it rather than try to cover it up. So cheers to the scar!
The most well-known cast member is one who just shows up to mess around with some bubble wrap for a faux infomercial. That is Robert Picardo from various Star Trek and Joe Dante projects.
Portal Runner is set in December of 1999 for no apparent reason other than the fact that it gave the filmmakers the chance to make some Y2K jokes. Despite being set in the past, the film actually fits right in with current trends. You have the Nolan character, and the evil being pursuing him, using mirrors to travel through parallel worlds, just like we’ve seen Marvel characters and Michelle Yeoh do in the recent releases Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Everything Everywhere All at Once. If you can’t get enough of multiverse shenanigans, Portal Runner is here to give you the lower budgeted version of the concept.
So go ahead and give Portal Runner a chance. After all, it’s free! And as an added bonus, it’s only 72 minutes long.
