Some movie premieres go all out, bringing in anyone and anything to drum up an extra push of publicity before it hits theaters for a wide audience. But the M3GAN premiere pulled a stunt that may rank as one of the creepiest in Hollywood history.
At the M3GAN premiere, eight real-life versions of the robotic doll took to the red carpet to perform a dance routine set to Taylor Swift’s “It’s Nice to Have a Friend”, a track that has been used in promotional materials. You can watch a clip below, but just as a warning, it is not easy to shake the visual off:
Also at the premiere, producer Jason Blum (whose Blumhouse Productions serves as one of the companies) dressed as one of the M3GANs, upping the creep factor by about a thousand-fold. When being interviewed, Blum said, “I love getting in drag anyway, no matter what the occasion is, but to have an occasion to wear my M3GAN costume again was a dream come true…I begged my [communications] team to allow me to do this again, and they finally said yes.”
Hopefully none of this will turn up in the already-discussed sequel.
M3GAN’s official plot: “M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma, M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to. When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady, Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems — a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.”
M3GAN hits theaters on January 6th, 2023.
