After the success of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the comedy/horror franchise is back on track. Not only will we be getting a sequel to Afterlife, but it was also announced earlier this year that a new animated Ghostbusters movie is in the works as well. Jennifer Kluska will be co-directing the Ghostbusters animated movie with Chris Prynoski. While speaking to The Wrap, Kluska said that The Real Ghostbusters animated TV series was her introduction to the franchise, and why it’s the right time to return to animation.
“It feels sort of very right and fitting to come back to ‘Ghostbusters’ in an animated form,” Jennifer Kluska said. “It feels like so many ‘Ghostbusters’ fans come from that space as well. And that gives you this bigger, weirder stage to play upon. And I think we want to obviously do something very new and different, as we always do but we know that there are so many ‘Ghostbusters’ fans who just are waiting to see this franchise animated again.” Sony Pictures Animation has been pushing the limits of animation with movies like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and while Kluska wouldn’t drop any hints at what this animated Ghostbusters movie will look like, it will be pushing the medium yet again.
By design this is going to be different. I think all of the films that Sony does are very consciously stylistically and tonally different and more and more also visually. The technology and the artistry pushes the medium and we are going to be looking for our own approach that’s going to be a very specific link to the ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise, to the world of supernatural and to the telling of ghost stories.
As for the sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, it was announced earlier this year that Gil Kenan will direct the movie. Kenan co-wrote the screenplay for Ghostbusters: Afterlife alongside director Jason Reitman, but Reitman will be stepping down for the sequel. “It’s an absolute honor to pick up the proton pack and step behind the camera for the next chapter of the Spengler family saga,” Gil Kenan said in a statement. “I just wish I could go back to 1984 and tell the kid in the sixth row of the Mann Valley West that one day he was going to get to direct a Ghostbusters film.” Kenan and Reitman will once again script the sequel, which is said to be taking the franchise back to New York City. It’s also expected that the ensemble cast, including Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon, will return for the sequel.
