A full Free Movie of the Day is posted on the JoBlo Movies YouTube channel every day of the week – but on Fridays things get a little freakier and a little more fun. Get your weekend started the right way by indulging in Friday Fright Nights! Every Friday, we’ll be taking a look at another genre movie you can watch in its entirety, free of charge, either on the YouTube channel linked above or in the video embed here.
This week’s Friday Fright Nights feature is writer/director Tyler Christensen’s 2016 horror film House of Purgatory. A while back, when writing about the slasher Scare Zone (which is set in and around a Halloween haunted attraction), I encouraged inspiring filmmakers with access to haunted attractions to use those locations to their advantage, just like the makers of Scare Zone did. House of Purgatory is another horror movie that’s set in and around a Halloween haunted attraction. In this case, it’s a haunted house that is said to be so scary, patrons will get their money back if they make it all the way through the place. And nobody ever does make it all the way through. Don’t expect to see a slasher chasing people around in this one, though. As the title implies, there is something supernatural going on at this haunted attraction.
House of Purgatory was the feature writing and directing debut for Christensen, who primarily works as a producer on reality TV shows like Billy the Exterminator, Wild West Alaska, Lone Star Lady, My Crazy Ex, and Naked and Afraid XL. With this film, he crafted the following story:
Four teenagers seek out a legendary haunted house on Halloween. Once inside, they realize it’s not an ordinary attraction, and the house may actually be able to re-create their deepest fears.
Brian Krause of the Stephen King / Mick Garris movie Sleepwalkers stars alongside Torey Adkins, Laura Coover, Marika Engelhardt, Brad Fry, Aaron Galvin, Elaine Ivy Harris, Dustin James, Anne Leighton, Tom Lodewyck, Lisa Musser, Samantha Novak, Danny Rhodes, Catherine Smitko, and Evan Vogel.
House of Purgatory feels like it gets off to a slow start, but you don’t have to wait too long for things to pick up – after all, the movie only has a running time of 75 minutes, and it has plenty of characters to torment within that short amount of time. Stick with it and see what you think of House of Purgatory once the supernatural shenanigans kick in.
To date, this remains the only feature Christensen has made. Since 2016, he has directed a short film and wrote and/or directed episodes of the TV show My Crazy Sex. So take a look at House of Purgatory – it’s free! – and let us know what you thought of it by leaving a comment below or on the YouTube page. Are you hoping Tyler Christensen will make movie horror movies in the future?
