Friday Fright Nights: Watch the twisted creature feature Greywood’s Plot right here!

Friday Fright Nights

A full Free Movie of the Day is posted on the JoBlo Movies YouTube channel every day of the week – but on Fridays things get a little freakier and a little more fun. Get your weekend started the right way by indulging in Friday Fright Nights! Every Friday, we’ll be taking a look at another genre movie you can watch in its entirety, free of charge, either on the YouTube channel linked above or in the video embed here.

The horror film we’re watching this week is director Josh Stifter’s Greywood’s Plot. Presented in black and white, this one is a 2022 release that looks – and for much of its running time, feels – like the sort of indie movie we would have gotten in the late ’90s or early ’00s, in the immediate wake of the success of films like Clerks and The Blair Witch Project. Thankfully, it doesn’t try to replicate the found footage style of The Blair Witch Project, but it is about a couple guys heading out on an ill-fated trip into the woods. In this one, mysterious footage has led them to believe that this land is inhabited by a dog-like cryptid. The Chupacabra!

It takes a long time for the horror to kick in, and during that time we’re just hanging out with these two dudes while they bounce comedic dialogue off of each other. So it’s easy to see why Clerks writer/director Kevin Smith gets a special thanks in the end credits. (The makers of The Blair Witch Project, on the other hand, are not acknowledged). Once the characters do venture into horror territory, you may begin to suspect that Clerks isn’t the only reason Stifter gave a nod to Smith. There’s something else Smith-esque in here. Something reminiscent of one of his more divisive films.

The black and white image also allows Stifter to emulate the look of classic horror films at times, which is a fun and welcome stylistic flourish.

Greywood's Plot Friday Fright Nights

Stifter directed Greywood’s Plot from a script he wrote with Daniel Degnan. The story they crafted has the following synopsis:

After finding a tape of what appears to be a monster, two friends journey into the woods to uncover if the video was a hoax.

Stifter and Degnan also star in the film alongside Kim Fagan, Samantha Kirchoff, Aaron McKenna, Keith Radichel, Max Stifter, and Nathan Strauss.

It took me a while to warm up to Greywood’s Plot, the movie didn’t draw me in right away, but once things got strange and horrific in the second half I started to enjoy the ride a lot more. By the time it ended, I was curious to check out Stifter and Degnan’s previous horror comedy, the 2018 film The Good Exorcist. Another one of Stifter’s directing credits is the 2016 animated short The Story of Christmas: Spark Bible Adventures.

So check out Greywood’s Plot – after all, it’s free! See if you like what Stifter and Degnan did with this movie and if you can spot the Kevin Smith homages. Then share your thoughts on the film by leaving a comment below or over on YouTube.
