Young Justice features time jumps between each of its seasons, and showrunners Greg Weisman and Brandon Vietti explain how they approach them for the show.
In a fan Q & A for DC Comics, the two showrunners responded to a question asking how they decide on how large a time jump should be, as well as what they choose to show onscreen versus offscreen. "We wanted a big time jump between the first two seasons to truly illustrate what our series was about, i.e. GROWING UP," Weisman said. "After that, honestly, it's more about what feels right."
When Season 2 -- Young Justice: Invasion -- premiered, it was set five years after the first season and revealed that many characters had joined the Team while others left and some even died. In the case of Robin, founding Team member Dick Grayson had moved on from the Robin moniker and became Nightwing, with Tim Drake already serving as the third Robin. Vietti detailed how these leaps can allow for "good material to write around."
"Time jumps obviously create a mystery at the beginning of each season," Vietti said. "We know our audience will want to know what happened between seasons and we can tease out the highlights over the course of a new season."
"There are always things we want to skip, so they become reveals," Weisman added. Some reveals in the show have come a whole season after they were set up. For example, towards the beginning of Season 3, Young Justice: Outsiders, Barbara Gordon is revealed to have become Oracle in between Invasion and Outsiders, indicating that the events of the iconic Batman: The Killing Joke story occurred, which is when Joker shoots Barbara in the spine and paralyzes her from the waist down. It wasn't until Season 4 though, Young Justice: Phantoms, that fans learn Barbara was paralyzed while stopping Cassandra Cain from assassinating the Joker.
According to Weisman, the showrunners' timeline for Young Justice currently stretches for 716 pages and it is still growing, detailing tons of events and what they might stem from. "Each new event that we add cascades into other decisions that also help to fill out the timeline. When things are really humming, the characters pretty much tell us what happens next, and we have surprisingly few 'decisions' to make."
As of writing, Young Justice: Phantoms recently returned from its mid-season break with a new arc focusing on Kaldur'ahm/Aquaman. Phantoms was broken up into character arcs focusing on each member of the original team, and the only remaining members left to receive an arc are Rachel Ervin/Rocket and Nightwing (and Wally West/Kid Flash, but he is currently dead in the Young Justice universe).
The first three seasons of Young Justice and more than half of Phantoms are now streaming on HBO Max.
