Thor: Love and Thunder is one of several Marvel Cinematic Universe projects coming out this year, but even fans are somewhat curious about the release date. Coming out in theaters in around three months, the movie has yet to release even a teaser trailer, let alone a full trailer. This is incredibly strange for such a huge movie, let alone an MCU feature.
There are many reasons suspected for this seeming delay, many of which may involve another upcoming Marvel movie. There's also the fact that the latest Thor is likely still thundering in production, all while the actors begin their press junkets for the movie. Here's a look at why audiences haven't seen so much as a glimpse of the God of Thunder's latest adventure.
As mentioned, Thor: Love & Thunder is still undergoing reshoots, fine-tuning what is likely a special effects and CGI-heavy affair. After all, Marvel has a reputation to uphold, and it certainly won't want to tarnish that with a less-than-ready look at its latest film. The film might also have the most to prove since, of Marvel's Big Three of Thor, Captain America and Iron Man, Thor is the only original left around. He's also the least popular of the trio, with Thor: Ragnarok being the only universally-beloved entry in his film series.
Nevertheless, if Love & Thunder is so great, wouldn't Marvel want to show it off? The actors are already starting their press tours, but it's definitely weird that they'd be doing this without so much as one trailer for the movie to promote. Fans are now going so far as to decipher the trailer's release date from supposedly hidden messages, which could be either good or bad for Marvel. It shows how excited die-hard fans are to see the new film, but it might backfire when it comes to grabbing and maintaining the attention of the general audience.
It could also be the nature of a post-pandemic world that Marvel is simply taking no chances when it comes to hyping up a release date that will have to be changed. For instance, Sony's recent non-MCU Marvel movie, Morbius, was delayed numerous times, and this likely affected its box office intake. By showing off the trailer for Love & Thunder closer to the intended release date, Marvel has a better chance of guaranteeing that this is when the movie will actually come out.
Another possible answer is that the events of Thor: Love & Thunder are heavily tied to whatever goes down in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This movie is sure to have a dramatic impact on the MCU going forward, with all major characters likely affected in some way. Such an idea lines up with the fact that Multiverse of Madness didn't get its first trailer until after Spider-Man: No Way Home was released. However, there are a few issues with this theory.
As massive as Doctor Strange 2 is known to be, it's hard to believe that it will have that much of a bearing on the plot of Thor: Love & Thunder. Plus, the movie's trailer could simply focus on the plot elements already known about the film, such as Gorr the God Butcher and Jane Foster becoming Thor. Third, compared to the previous two MCU movies (counting Multiverse of Madness), Thor 4 will need to be promoted, as it lacks the built-in interest derived from the Multiverse and returning actors from non-MCU franchises. Hopefully, Love & Thunder quickly strikes with its first trailer, as fans simply can't wait much longer to see what the movie will be like.
Thor: Love & Thunder arrives in theaters on July 8, 2022.
