Sony Releases Uncharted's First 10 Minutes Online | CBR

Sony Pictures recently dropped the first ten minutes of the video game film adaptation Uncharted online for action-adventure and gamers to enjoy ahead of its digital and home media release.

The clip begins with actor Tom Holland's Nathan Drake dangling from a cargo plane about to crash over the desert-- an adaptation of one of the most memorable and iconic sequences in Naughty Dog's Uncharted: Drake's Deception. There's climbing across cargo in mid-air, combat and a ton of other action before the film throws viewers into Drake's childhood and his beginnings as a thief.

Uncharted premiered in theaters on Feb. 18 after a multitude of delays in every step of the film's development. At the time of writing, the film has grossed $360 million worldwide on a budget of $120 million. Where critics have largely dismissed the film as big, silly video game film, audiences have widely enjoyed it, according to review aggregates such as Rotten Tomatoes.

Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman declared the film a sizeable success, stating, "With over $100 million in box office worldwide in just one weekend, and a 90 percent positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Uncharted is a new hit movie franchise for the company." His statements suggest the film could be just the first in a saga.

The film is also notable for being one of the handful of Hollywood films allowed into theaters in China so far this year. However, beyond the country's borders, in South East Asia, the film has not fared well, partly because of its controversial inclusion of a map bearing the Nine Dash Line-- a demarcation often pushed by Chinese authorities which claims regions across the South China Sea recognized as territories belonging to neighboring nations.

Vi Kien Thanh, head of the Department of Cinema in Vietnam, confirmed, "The film was banned from distribution after we watched it and found it contained an illegal image of the infamous nine-dash line." Sony has not responded to the controversy.

Uncharted follows a younger Nathan Drake as he is introduced to Victor "Sully" Sullivan. Together, they embark on a journey to recover a treasure thought to have been lost in the voyages of Magellan. It's a race to the finish as the two compete with cutthroat billionaire Santiago Moncada and his mercenaries for the the treasure. On top of all of that, Nate and Sully also uncover clues that may lead to Nate's long-lost brother.

Uncharted is scheduled to be released on digital April 26 and on 4K UHD and Blu-ray on May 10.
