Morbius Glides to the Top of the Weekend Box Office | CBR

Morbius has already gained notoriety among audiences after moviegoers and critics left a wave of negative reviews. In spite of this, Sony's latest release enjoyed a solid opening weekend.

The Jared Leto-led superhero film grossed $39 million in its opening weekend in the U.S, placing it at no. 1 among current theatrical releases. Since its release on April 1, Morbius has grossed $84 million at the box office worldwide on a budget of $75 million.

Sony's Morbius was off to a bad start even before it premiered. Critics and audiences present at early screenings universally panned the film. Several critics described Morbius as "messy" and "confusing" in its plot. It wasn't helped by what many called "outdated" CGI. On top of all of that, critics and audiences -- after it leaked -- heavily criticized the film's post-credit scenes, which at least one critic called "the worst post credit scenes you've EVER seen." At the time of writing, Morbius has a critic score of 17 percent on review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes. Despite many audiences broadly agreeing with critics' complaints about the film, Morbius has an audience score of 69 percent.

Director Daniel Espinosa recently talked about the future of Sony's Spider-Man Universe, which will continue with the upcoming Kraven the Hunter film, currently filming in the United Kingdom. While he was unable to reveal what those plans are, he touched on what villain he would like the Living Vampire to meet and in so doing hinted at Sony's plans for a Sinister Six ensemble film. "I think Norman Osborn would be very interesting," Espinosa said. "That's a whole different idea, that's like if you go away from the idea of Sinister Six and you're going into something different."

Morbius' post-credits scene brought the Living Vampire together with Vulture, who was introduced on the big screen in Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Homecoming. Actor Michael Keaton's appearance in Morbius, and his reprisal of Adrian Toomes, was revealed in one of the film's earliest trailers-- hinting at the relationship between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Sony's growing film franchise.

The scene suggested Toomes was able to cross over from the MCU to Sony's universe after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which toyed with the multiverse and featured a major crossover with multiple Sony film properties, including Venom, with actor Tom Hardy briefly appearing as Eddie Brock, confirming a connection.
