Star Wars Exec Bluntly Debunks Obi-Wan Kenobi/Darth Maul Reports

Reports that Darth Maul was intended to appear in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series but was cut at the last minute have been debunked by a Star Wars executive.

Writing on Twitter, Lucasfilm Creative Executive Pablo Hidalgo commented on a post stating that the fan-favorite Sith Lord would appear in the Disney+ series, curtly noting that the report was incorrect. "A brown sun rises. Bullshit has been spilled," writes Hidalgo. While his account is private, screenshots of the exchange were captured by StarWarsNewsNet.

The report, which came from The Hollywood Reporter, notes that sources suggested that Darth Maul was originally going to serve as Obi-Wan Kenobi's main antagonist. Original actor Ray Park was supposedly actively preparing to reprise his role as the villain before his scenes were scrapped and Darth Maul was replaced by Darth Vader. THR has yet to respond to Hidalgo's comments.

While some fans may be disappointed that Darth Maul was never on the cards for Obi-Wan Kenobi, enthusiasts of the galaxy far, far away can instead look forward to the return of Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker. Speaking to his reprisal, Christensen recalls when director Deborah Chow requested a meeting with the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy star. "Deborah came up and we spent the day chatting," said Christensen. "She told me a little bit about the project and her vision for it, and I just thought that it sounded wonderful. I was very excited to come back."

Another villain confirmed to appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi is the Grand Inquisitor, who will be making his live-action debut. Played by Rupert Friend, the sinister Jedi Hunter will likely be pursuing Obi-Wan after being tasked with eliminating every Force-user that wasn't killed during Order 66.

While Darth Vader is expected to be the imposing, terrifying voice fans know and love, Obi-Wan himself may seem a little unfamiliar. Following the tragic events of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Ewan McGregor's Jedi Master has become a recluse, hiding in shame after the fall of The Republic. "We find Obi-Wan at the beginning of our story rather broken and faithless and beaten, somewhat given up," explained McGregor.

Fans excited to see McGregor and Christensen return to some of their most iconic roles won't need to wait much longer. Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres on Disney+ on May 25.
