Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Poster Perfectly Homages Sega Genesis Box Art

The latest poster for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 serves as a fun reference to long-time fans of the iconic video game franchise.

Released in conjuncture with the latest trailer, the visual used for the live-action poster homage the original box art for the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 game. Both pieces feature Sonic and his best friend Miles "Tails" Prower positioned in front of a giant red "2" while the sinister face of Dr. Robotnik peers out from behind the number. While the original art is more straightforward in its aesthetic, the movie poster takes the visual and includes plenty of other nods to the upcoming film, including the temple from the Labyrinth Zone.

While the reference is certainly a nice touch for fans, audiences can expect the film to contain plenty more Easter Eggs dedicated to the sprawling Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. "[A]s we were sort of setting out to plot [the Sonic 2 movie], I think we all got excited to pull in that great imagery that all of the fans are going to get excited about when they see it on the big screen and create a cinematic version of the stuff that fans have loved from [the games]," said director Jeff Fowler. "It's a great problem to have that there's so many great Easter eggs that we can incorporate... I couldn't even begin to list them because there's so much stuff for fans to get excited about."

Acting as a direct sequel to the Blue Blur's first live-action film in 2020, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is expected to raise the speed even higher. Dr. Robotnik returns to terrorize the world once more, learning of an ancient power source known as a Chaos Emerald. To secure the artifact, he not only creates another army of robots to defeat Sonic but he also recruits Knuckles the Echidna, who can go toe-to-toe with the world's faster hedgehog. "You’ve got Sonic's speed, you've got Knuckles' super strength, and we just put them in an environment and let them go at it," said Fowler. "It's like a little Captain America [and] Iron Man; it just offers so much opportunity in terms of fight choreography and action."

Starring Ben Schwartz, Jim Carey, Colleen O'Shaughnessy, Idris Elba and James Marsden, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 bolts into theaters on April 8.
