Rick & Morty: 10 Harsh Realities Of Being Rick | CBR

Rick Sanchez (C-137) of Rick & Morty is a genius scientist. He created a contained megaverse that constantly has him as the smartest person in the world across infinite universes in the Central Finite Curve. With such a high IQ, it's baffling to see Rick have such a low EQ.

Contrary to fans' beliefs, Rick isn't entirely heartless. Regardless of his reputation on screen, most of his issues can be narrowed down to his past traumas. There are issues from his past and present that make him the way he is and therefore, there are plenty of harsh realities that come with being Rick Sanchez.

10 "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub" Is A Cry For Help

In Rest And Ricklaxation, the grandpa-grandson duo goes to an alien spa and has their toxic traits stripped from their personalities. An appalling detail in this episode is that Toxic Rick inherits the side of Rick that loves Morty. This is only possible if the original person views a side of themselves to be poisonous, implying that the love Rick has for his family is horrid enough to cast away.

This hatred for emotions prevents him from expressing his true feelings. Most of the time, this projects into a variety of unhealthy coping mechanisms, one of them being his catchphrase: "Wubba Lubba dub dub." The famous gibberish directly translates to "I am in great pain." Although this has become a meme in the fandom, it does not negate the sobering fact that Rick is silently suffering.

9 Rick Had To Erase His Memories Of Cloning Beth To Move On From The Pain Of Being A Terrible Father

Usually, when people go through a crisis, they acquire a new hobby. For Beth Smith, it's following her father's footsteps of exploring the universe. The massive emotional baggage Rick has imparted on his daughter does not signify his lack of love for her. Wanting to fulfill all of her wishes, Rick creates a clone of her - one to send to space, another to stay on Earth.

However, the pain was too much for the already-depressed scientist. To cope, he shuffles the two Beths and erases his memories of the whole ordeal, not being able to process the pain he felt from being "a terrible father."

8 Season 5 Revealed Rick C-137's Greatest Nemesis

Season 5 of Rick & Morty revealed a significant amount of Rick's deepest, darkest secrets. One big spoiler is that Rick's original family was killed when Beth was just a little girl. This means that the family the audience was first introduced to - the ones who mutated into Cronenbergs - was not Rick C-137's original family.

It is further revealed that the person responsible for their demise is another Rick. Rick C-137 made it his mission to hunt down the perpetrator. In a montage of flashbacks, Rick drowns himself in alcohol and is in unspeakable agony over losing his family. His entire life is fueled with hate and revenge for a Rick that refuses to come forth.

7 Rick Grows Attached To His Toilet-Mate Only For Him To Die Soon After

Rick Sanchez has an extreme dislike for people and socializing. He and Tony did not start on the right foot by any means, as Tony used Rick's sacred toilet. To Rick, this was a punishable offense.

Rick doesn't make good on his promises of eliminating Tony. As their story progresses, Rick briefly puts Tony in a simulation of his own heaven. Later, he gives Tony's father $8 billion in their local currency to compensate for his son's death. Eventually, Rick sits drunk and sad on the toilet that he and Tony once fought over. It shows that Rick truly did care about Tony. It's disheartening to see the cynical man care for someone new just for them to die soon after.

6 Rick Attempted Suicide

Throughout Rick & Morty, Rick has had only one romantic relationship worth acknowledging. Unity is first introduced in season 2's Auto Erotic Assimilation. They've dated in the past and upon re-meeting each other, they rekindle their relationship.

After Diane Sanchez, Unity is possibly the only person Rick has ever truly loved. Unsurprisingly, their relationship didn't last. This leaves Rick dreadfully heartbroken, and he tries to kill himself in the garage. It's the somber realization that none of his romantic relationships have ever worked out, which almost makes him lose hope.

5 Birdperson Breaks His Heart Repeatedly

Birdperson is one of Rick's only friends, and Rick's first heartbreak with his friend is when Birdperson dies. He passed away at his wedding in the arms of his wife. To break Rick's heart a second time, it's revealed that Birdperson once refused Rick's invitation to go explore the universe with him.

Rick confesses that he loves Birdperson but much to his dismay, all Birdperson says in response is, "The relationship that we have is not worth my integrity." His last departure in season five breaks Rick even more. Rick put in everything he had to resurrect Birdperson but the latter leaves him behind again. It speaks volumes as to how much Birdperson valued their relationship in the first place.

4 Being The Smartest Man In The Universe Means He Can Never Let His Guard Down

Rick C-137, or the "Rickiest Rick," is one of the smartest Ricks ever. This comes with the responsibility to solve every near-death encounter that tends to follow his and Morty's intergalactic adventures. Season one's M. Night Shaym-Aliens shows Rick genuinely having a good time until he finds out he's been stuck in a hologram the entire time.

Season two's Rick In Time is the perfect example that, even at home, someone's bound to mess up and Rick has to be ready to pick up the pieces. Rick may be known to be the epitome of chaos but being the smartest man alive has its consequences. It's almost entirely on him to protect worlds from falling into shambles.

3 The Destructive Cynic Is Secretly A Softie

Through 5 seasons of madness, it is clear that Rick hasn't had the easiest past. After decades of intergalactic travels and reality jumping, Rick is incessantly tormented with emotional breakdowns.

Even with all the alcohol he drowns himself in, his past always manages to catch up. Rick Sanchez's bad traits are a huge focal point of Rick & Morty but he is only a product of the things that happened in his past that he's yet to heal from.

2 Rick Sacrifices Himself To The Federation To Save His Family

While on the run from the Federation, Rick overhears the rest of the Smith family conspiring on leaving him behind. Whether he's willing to admit it, Rick cares deeply about his family. Despite doing the best that he can to run away from the Federation, like finding whole planets to reside in, he sees that his family is unhappy because of him.

The weight of this pressure is seemingly too much for Rick and the nihilistic grandpa grows a conscience. In the episode, he finally surrenders himself to the Federation to give his family the freedom that they deserve.

1 His Overbearing Ego May Lead To His Inevitable Demise

With an ego as big as the universe itself, Rick often forgets that he is merely human. He forgets that there are limitations to his God complex and overestimates his ability to pull off impossible tasks.

In an attempt to fix a time fracture in season one, he loses himself and almost breaks the spacetime continuum. He gave Morty a "love potion" in season one, only to mutate the Earth's population into Cronenbergs instead. These instances are not the first time Rick overestimates his powers and it surely would not be the last.
