Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Debuts New Trailer Ahead of US Premiere | CBR

Crunchyroll dropped a new trailer for Jujutsu Kaisen 0.

The latest trailer for the prequel movie shows the events that lead up to Yuta becoming cursed, and how the sorcerer Satoru Gojo convinces him to use those powers for good. The trailer also offers a few more glimpses at Yuta's Jujutsu High classmates in action, as Maki Zenin battles a massive Curse while Panda and Toge take on the movie's primary antagonist, the humanity-hating Suguru Geto.

The movie is set one year before Yuji Itadori is introduced to the world of sorcerers and Curses. Consequently, the movie instead focuses on Yuta Okkotsu, a young man who once promised his best friend, Rika Orimoto, that he would marry her someday. Unfortunately, Rika is tragically killed in an accident and her soul is transformed into a Curse, a type of vicious monster born from humanity's negative energy. Forced into a life of isolation by Rika's violently overprotective spirit, Yuta is sent to Jujutsu High to learn how to control her power, but his new education is interrupted when a bitter sorcerer from Gojo's past reemerges to threaten the entire human race.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 premiered in Japan on Dec. 24 and is already one of the top 10 highest-grossing anime films of all time. Despite opening in the last days of the year, the film is now the highest grossing movie of 2021 in Japan, usurping Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon A Time's place atop the year's rankings. Distributor Toho Co. Ltd. originally projected the movie to earn 10 billion yen (about $85 million USD) during its entire lifetime, a sum that it has now surpassed by a healthy 2 billion yen before its international release.

The movie is based on a manga that was first titled Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School. The short series was created by Gege Akutami in 2017 and while it originally didn't carry the title, the manga was actually the first story set in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, serving as an introduction to many of the characters and concepts that would later be expanded upon in the author's 2018 manga. Once Akutami's story about Yuji Itadori became a hit, the prequel manga was renamed to Jujutsu Kaisen 0 to reflect its connection to the main series.

The main Jujutsu Kaisen manga is available in English from VIZ Media, though it was recently announced that the next chapter would be delayed due to Akutami's on-going health issues. The complete first season of the anime is available for streaming from Crunchyroll. The movie will be released in the United States and Canada on March 18.
