Horizon Forbidden West: All Major Settlements, Ranked (& What Services They Provide)

Horizon Forbidden West is both vast and exciting, occupied by a multitude of different tribes that have taken to settling different parts of the explorable world. The Tenakth, who are split into three sub-groups, have spread out across the land and can be found in all corners of the west, while the Utaru stay closer to home.

The exploratory attitude of the various tribes has brought about many major settlements, each with its own set of unique opportunities for the player. In the land of Horizon Forbidden West, these places serve as major trading hubs, medical outposts, and even training grounds. Settlements offer a variety of services to not only their people but to Aloy as well.

WARNING: Spoilers ahead!

9 Legacy's Landfall Is A Late-Game Beauty

Reachable only through the use of the Sunwing mount, Legacy's Landfall feels like a great reward after testing out an exciting new skill. On an island away from the Horizon mainland, this settlement is a late-game location with plenty of personality, with its sister settlement The Digsite being only a stone's throw away. Legacy's Landfall is also occupied by the Quen, who are a mysterious wonder of their own.

Available to the player are access to a stash, a hunting goods merchant, a workbench, an herbalist, a stitcher, and a cook. The game within the game, Machine Strike, has even made its way across the water here at Legacy's Landfall, and an expert-level Machine Strike player is ready to accept Aloy's challenge.

8 Barren Light Is The Gate Between Worlds

Functioning similarly to Daytower from Horizon Zero Dawn, Barren Light is the gate that provides entrance to Tenakth territory, and just before it lies a whole community of people. Because the Tenakth are so hostile to outsiders, this is the last place that Aloy will encounter the familiar Carja guards from the first game, who daren't step further than they are permitted.

Barren Light contains the typical services, such as a hunting goods merchant, a workbench, a cook, an herbalist, and access to Aloy's stash. Additionally, there's also access to a beginner Machine Strike player, a stitcher, and the opportunity to trade signal lenses with Raynah as part of her side quest.

7 Scalding Spear Is The Desert Clan's Water Source And Capital

The capital to the Desert Clan of the Tenakth, Scalding Spear holds the only drinkable water source in the clan's territory, with the source being a hole in the ground, aptly referred to as "The Wound." Scalding Spear reflects the sheer survivability of the Desert Clan, and the harder struggles they face compared to their Sky and Lowland Clan comrades.

Scalding Spear gives Aloy access to the standard services: a workbench, a hunting goods merchant, a cook, a herbalist, and access to Aloy's stash. Not just that, but like the other two major clan capitals, Scalding Spear has a face painter, an outfit dyer, and a stitcher. There's also an intermediate Machine Strike player and a Melee Pit.

6 The Bulwark Is The Formidable Sky Clan Capital

By the time Aloy reaches The Bulwark, its impressive nature has been mentioned so many times in Horizon Forbidden West, that it must be seen to be believed, and it certainly doesn't disappoint. Sitting high up on the mountains and defended by an (almost) impenetrable wall of stone, The Bulwark is as foreboding as it is strong, serving as home to members of Tenakth's Sky Clan.

Typical services are provided, such as a hunting goods merchant, a herbalist, a workbench, a cook, and access to a stash. The Bulwark is also home to a variety of rarer merchants, such as a stitcher, an outfit dyer, and a face painter. In terms of activities, there's an experienced Machine Strike player to challenge and a Melee Pit.

5 The Memorial Grove / The Maw Of The Arena Shows Hekarro's Strength

The Memorial Grove is where Aloy will first meet the imposing yet inspiring Chief Hekarro, and next to it, is The Maw of the Arena, an area that opens up after some major story events. Chief Hekarro's personal guard and his loyal Tenakth followers have made the ruins of this old museum their home, and they see the holographic displays as visions that will guide their path. There are plenty of typical services on offer in Memorial Grove: a hunting goods merchant, a workbench, a cook, a herbalist, and access to a stash, as well as the slightly rarer stitcher.

For Machine Strike fanatics, there's not only an expert player here, but once they're successfully beaten they'll step aside to allow players to challenge their master, a Machine Strike legend. This area boasts two unique merchants as well: one who will very usefully trade a variety of machine parts for the black boxes that Aloy finds throughout Horizon Forbidden West, and the other, who will give Aloy rewards for beating challenges in the area, or for collecting tags from rebel outposts.

4 Plainsong Is Home To The Utaru Tribe

One of the most visually impressive areas in Horizon Forbidden West, Plainsong is the major settlement of the Utaru tribe. With the juxtaposition of the red blight engulfing their crops and the incredible green foliage that creates their home, Plainsong is a visual marvel in every way, especially because it's all set atop long-abandoned satellite dishes.

Plainsong offers typical services, such as a hunting goods merchant, an herbalist, a workbench, a cook, and stash access. Plainsong is also home to a lesser-seen dyer and a beginner-level Machine Strike player – all of which can be found on one of the three different satellite dishes that make up the settlement.

3 Chainscrape Is Where It All Begins

The earliest major settlement that Aloy will come across in the game, Chainscrape, and the similarly named region it resides in, Chainscrape Valley, are the ideal setting for the roughly 8-hour introduction Aloy will receive to the world of Horizon Forbidden West. Built and maintained by Oseram, Chainscrape is a worker's settlement full of those with practical skills.

Chainscrape offers typical services, such as a hunting goods merchant, an herbalist, a workbench, a cook, and stash access. There's also a stitcher, which isn't seen as often as the other services. This territory is also the best place to get into two of the game's activities: Machine Strike, taught to Aloy by the beginner player in the area, and the Melee Pits.

2 Thornmarsh Is The Lowland Clan's Capital

Thornmarsh is the capital of the Lowland Clan of the Tenakth and a marvel that sits on the coast overlooking the ocean. It is the last of the Tenakth capital settlements that Aloy will come across in her Horizon Forbidden West journey, and its late-game status certainly doesn't make it any less beautiful.

Thornmarsh's late-game status is reflected in its merchants, who offer powerful, high-rarity gear. There, Aloy can find a hunting goods merchant, access to the stash, a workbench, a cook, an herbalist, a dyer, a stitcher, and even a face painter. Additionally, Thornmarsh also has a skilled Machine Strike player and a Melee Pit, making this arguably one of the best places for Aloy to acquire some incredible weapons and outfits.

1 Hidden Ember Hides A Breathtaking Scene

The majestic settlement of Hidden Ember is nothing more than a run-down, old-world building when Aloy first arrives, occupied by three Oseram delvers who are obsessed with putting on a show. After helping them, Aloy is treated to what can only be described as one of the most jaw-dropping moments of Horizon Forbidden West, as lights begin to fill the sky and holographic images dance across the horizon.

Hidden Ember offers the typical services, such as a hunting goods merchant, an herbalist, a workbench, and stash access. There's also a difficult-to-beat Machine Strike player as well. However, the best and most unique service Hidden Ember offers is the ability to change the lights in the sky based on the gizmos that Aloy acquires. Stremmur will be available to talk to once Aloy completes the required side quests and returns to Hidden Ember after some time, with Erend telling her over the focus when to return.
