Best Romantic Shows Streaming on Netflix | CBR

Sometimes viewers just want to step away from the gloomy, depressing contents of Euphoria or the dramatic conflicts of Yellowstone and just dive into some cliché romance that makes the heart flutter. Thankfully, Netflix has plenty of these types of shows to choose from.

Netflix's array of romance shows offer a diverse selection that anybody of any age can watch. There are love stories for teenagers, young adults and older adults, and these stories also fall under many genres such as fantasy, medical and telenovela. Here are seven shows streaming on Netflix that will satisfy the romance cravings.

The CW has a lot of failures and embarrassments as a network, but one of its gold stars is the romantic comedy, Jane the Virgin. The show is exactly as the title says (with a little bit of spice): the story follows a religious Venezuelan-American woman, Jane Gloriana Villanueva, after she finds out she's pregnant after being mistakenly artificially inseminated during a check-up. Her vow to wait until marriage to have sex is shaken as she navigates becoming a mother while being stuck in a love triangle between her fiancé and the biological father of her child.

The over-the-top storytelling adheres to the telenovela style that brings together culture, family and more dramatically, romance. The love triangle brought back the infamous Twilight "teams" that allow hardcore fans to express their favorite love interest. It was never clear whether Jane would choose Team Rafael or Team Michael until the very last season, which makes the series more thrilling and binge-worthy.

Apparently, 18 seasons just isn't enough to deliver cheesy and heartbreaking medical love stories, but Grey's Anatomy sure has found a way to thin out its narrative. The newer stories may not be captivating enough to keep fans at the edge of their seat, but the earlier seasons of this medical drama stole the hearts of viewers with Meredith Grey's love life. Meredith's relationship with Derek Shepherd undeniably was the glue that kept the show from falling off its hinges in the very beginning, as their dreamy -- and steamy -- connection was like a romance novel coming to life.

Of course, the show running for almost two decades does mean a steady decline in storytelling and fan-favorite relationships seeing their end. But it still manages to find new ways of sparking a newfound love with excitement and drama. The show may be based in a hospital surrounded by surgeons way in over their heads, but the real surgeries are the characters mending their broken hearts back together.

Shonda Rhimes goes back to the Regency era in London to produce this Netflix original series focusing on the competitive world of London's high-class society. The show is narrated by Julie Andrews as an anonymous columnist of a newsletter who reports over the elitist love scandals. If it sounds like a suspicious rip-off, it's because it is. Bridgerton is basically just Gossip Girl, but British and regal.

But just like Gossip Girl, the luxurious lifestyle doesn't always mean there is glitz and glamour to throw around. There's the obsession of mothers trying to secure the best match for their daughters as debutantes presented in court, much like the Bennett sisters in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. But there are also some elements to respect the show for. Unlike the novels, the show is set in an alternate universe where people of color are members of the high-class society, including Queen Charlotte, which brings more diversity into the show.

There's nothing like three graceful Southern women exploring their single lives while raising rebellious teenagers at the same time. Sweet Magnolias definitely has its moments to roll eyes at -- the "pour it out" moments are awfully out-of-touch with how cliched they are -- but it's surprisingly progressive with its marks on sex, relationships and the status of a woman in a small Southern town. The women of this show own businesses, have high-paying jobs and manage to hold down a household all on their own at the same time.

Those factors are the highlights of the show, but it's not really what draws people in. Maddie's recent divorce crumbles her to almost nothing, but she's immediately put back together when meeting her son's attractive new baseball coach. It's almost astonishing how the show expects viewers to believe that these two would never end up together, but they play around with them crossing the line with their flirtations for a few episodes.

Starring This Is Us' Alexandra Breckenridge and Grey's Anatomy's Martin Henderson, Virgin River already has all the talent to succeed as a romantic drama. Netflix sure seems to have a thing for small towns to start new beginnings and relationships, which is where Virgin River starts its main character.

Mel is a nurse practitioner and midwife who jumps at the opportunity for a new job location in Virgin River from Los Angeles. But soon she finds that it's not as easy leaving the past behind, which creates haunting memories when she begins to fall for Jack, the bartender of the town. It's not nearly as cheesy as a Hallmark show, but definitely can revive the Hallmark addiction with its exaggerated plot if the right audience was looking for it.

Outlander has been one of television's leading shows in historical romance for the past eight years and it doesn't seem to be stopping anytime soon since the novels are still being written. Besides being a romance, it's also a war story and a period-piece fantasy. But at its core, it's an ab-ripping airport novel that would be sold for much more than it's worth.

The first episode of Outlander is an immediate draw for viewers to continue, and the stakes only get higher from there. A young nurse from the World War II era is transported back in time to 1743 and is forced to marry a Highlander, Jamie, out of necessity. The two begin to fall in love, despite her being married back in WWII, but it's love in its most raw and purest form.

Finally, Netflix has its own The Bachelor to bring in the reality audience and even utilizes the weekly release format, which is entirely unlike Netflix to begin with. The premise of Love Is Blind is absolutely off the wall, which makes it even more delectable.

30 men and women participate on the show hoping to find love in a very serious way. The opinionated and, sometimes villainous, participants spend 10 days speed-dating without seeing each other's faces, and then the men choose to propose to whichever woman they choose to marry. For a Netflix original in 2022, they somehow managed to make the most untraditional show that still manages to stick to the traditions that have been evolving in the past decade. Once they are at the alter -- yes, quite literally -- they make the final decision to split up or get married.
