Batman: Beyond the White Knight Just Demolished the Wayne Legacy

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Batman: Beyond the White Knight #1, on sale now from DC Comics.

One of the most shocking revelations that came out of Batman: Curse of the White Knight was the truth behind Bruce Wayne's family. It turned out that the evil Bakkar killed Edmond Wayne centuries ago, adopted his identity and flooded Gotham's valley. This act allowed his successors to trade with Asia and Europe, amassing wealth and a capitalist dynasty.

As a true descendant of the Wayne family, Jean-Paul Valley didn't just want his birthright back; he wanted to show the city that the Bat they believed in came from a criminal bloodline. Luckily, Bruce stopped him and set things right by turning himself in, unmasking and using his wealth to fix a broken city. Unfortunately, in Batman: Beyond the White Knight's #1 (by Sean Gordon Murphy, Dave Stewart and AndWorld Design), the Wayne legacy of modern reparations was smashed to pieces.

In the past, Wayne Industries was used as a slush fund for criminals to weave sinister webs, empowering corruption in the city. Realizing that infrastructure was essential, Bruce later created a reparations fund meant to help the city by building schools, hospitals, and roads. and asked for the money to be used to build schools, hospitals, roads, etc. However, Dick Grayson and his Gotham Terrorist Oppression Unit had other ideas.

Derek Powers took over Wayne's company and convinced the authorities to buy into a police state after the Joker and Azrael caused carnage in the city. The funds were then diverted to the manufacturing of weapons, turning Dick's crew into militarized Batmen. Powers became a lord of war, building tanks and guns, all in the name of control and safety akin to DC's recent crossover "Fear State."

Even worse, none of the allocated funds were used to actually help the city. Because of this, Bruce's solution has become a problem and was used to create the WMDs that now plague Gotham City. This has inherently damaged the legacy of the Wayne family, with their money being used to harm the city rather than help it.

That leads to the second sullying of the Wayne legacy -- the Batman mantle itself. Apart from Dick's officers warping the symbol, Bruce's Batman Beyond suit was stolen by the salvager, Terry McGinnis. Powers co-opted the teen and had him don the suit, showcasing its power.

Bruce initially decommissioned the suit, but it is now imperative that he find a way to retrieve it in order to attempt to minimize the damage Powers has caused. This has all ultimately turned the Wayne legacy into something it was never meant to be, a weapon that is being used against Gotham City.
