8 Times Tanjiro Acted Selfishly In Demon Slayer (& Paid The Price)

Tanjiro Kamado is not a selfish person. He's often considered an incredibly selfless hero amongst shonen protagonists of popular anime. He is kind, compassionate, and empathetic, even toward man-eating, murderous demons. However, Tanjiro also has his own goals.

He wants to kill Muzan Kibutsuji for slaughtering his family and turning Nezuko into a demon. He also wants to cure his sister, who has proven herself a demon who can resist the urge to consume human flesh and blood. Because of these goals, Tanjiro often is forced to do selfish things, even if they're for selfless reasons.

8 When He Tried To Save Nezuko

Tanjiro Kamado had just found his entire family slaughtered at the hands of Muzan Kibutsuji, so when his little sister Nezuko showed signs of life, he was determined to do whatever he could to save her. However, she had become a demon, and she attacked him. He was saved by the Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka but Giyu told him that Nezuko needed to die.

Tanjiro selfishly refused, leading to Nezuko further attacking both of them while Giyu also attacked Tanjiro. Thankfully, Nezuko remembered herself and protected Tanjiro, saving both of them, but not before Tanjiro took a beating both physically and emotionally.

7 When He Wanted To Become A Slayer

Tanjiro wanted to become a Demon Slayer not only to find a way to cure Nezuko but also because he wanted revenge on Muzan for killing his family. However, wanting to become stronger is sometimes more selfish than selfless, as it placed both Tanjiro's and Nezuko's life in constant danger from both demons and Hashira.

Because Tanjiro was a slayer, he had to deal with the Demon Slayer Corps who wanted to eradicate Nezuko on multiple occasions. Furthermore, every time she had to come out to save him (which was often because he did not take care of himself), Nezuko's humanity was put at risk.

6 When He Tried To Convince The Hashira To Accept Nezuko

The Hashira are an elite group of Demon Slayers who have mastered their breathing techniques and led other Demon Slayers in their battles against Muzan and his subordinates. Their job was to kill demons and they had all seen so much tragedy at the hands of demons that it made sense they'd never trust one.

So, Tanjiro did the smart thing and took Nezuko directly to the Hashiras' den. There, they were able to scrutinize her and decide whether she was trustworthy. They tested her, and even though she passed, this put her at extreme risk.

5 When He Took Nezuko Everywhere

No one can ever accuse Nezuko of being weak. She is incredibly strong, which is why she comes out to help Tanjiro fight regularly. Unfortunately, this puts her at serious risk of succumbing to her demonic hunger. So, it is irresponsible of Tanjiro to take her around everywhere he goes (including into fights).

Nezuko had to intervene many times. She and Tanjiro both almost died and Nezuko narrowly escaped being kidnapped by Rui to act as his fake sister. During the fight with Daki, Nezuko was both decapitated and tempted to eat human blood.

4 When He Confronted Rui

Tanjiro should have known better than to confront one of the Twelve Kizuki without a Hashira at his side, but that's exactly what he did when he confronted Rui. Of course, he did not have too much of a choice, but he didn't play it smart when he realized familial bonds were both Rui's trigger and his weak point.

Instead, he instigated Rui by telling him how Nezuko would never be part of Rui's "family" and by fighting together with her, making Rui feel even more envious. He was very lucky that some of the Hashira showed up because he almost died a horrific death.

3 When He Guilted Zenitsu Into Fighting The Drum Demon

Zenitsu Agatsuma might be a girl-obsessed coward, but that doesn't mean that Tanjiro should have guilted him into helping fight an ex-demon moon. When Zenitsu was asleep, he was able to fight demons and was extremely powerful. This is likely how he got through the selection process, but he never should have done so.

The fact of the matter was that Zenitsu was not ready to be a Demon Slayer. Though his sleeping self was capable, it was unreliable. Tanjiro didn't even know about Zenitsu's secret sleeping power, so it was pretty irresponsible of him to go into the demon's lair alone and force Zenitsu to follow.

2 When He Planned To Help Tamayo

Tanjiro's ultimate goal is to save Nezuko by finding a cure for being a demon, and there was another demon who had the same goal: Tamayo. When the two ran into each other, Tamayo tasked Tanjiro with helping gather upper-rank demon blood.

Because of his desire to help Tamayo, he is forced not only to fight Susamaru but also upper-rank demons later on in the series. Not only did Tanjiro watch his comrades (and even Hashira) die at the hands of upper-rank demons, but he also had to help fight them himself, which put him and Nezuko at risk.

1 When He Wanted To Fight Daki

Arguably one of the worst things Tanjiro did was decide to fight Daki by himself. For a moment, it seemed like she was going to let him go. She had just killed innocent villagers but turned away to leave. However, Tanjiro decided he could not let her get away with it.

He was able to survive the encounter, but that was only thanks to his sister's intervention, which brought a different set of issues. She was seriously injured despite her impressive regenerative powers. Furthermore, she also was tempted to eat human flesh when she came across injured innocents.
