6 MCU Characters Who Were Almost Recast (& Why) | CBR

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has featured some of the most outstanding and highly-acclaimed actors in Hollywood. From the likes of Sir Anthony Hopkins and Cate Blanchett to Robert Redford and Ben Kingsley, there's no shortage of talent in the MCU. Even some of Marvel's more controversial castings have worked out for the best.

Robert Downey Jr. was born to play Tony Stark. Chris Evans was made for Captain America. Chris Hemsworth is Thor. And although it seems impossible to imagine anyone else playing the characters audiences have grown to love and appreciate, many actors in the MCU had to beat out a long list of talent before they were confirmed for their respective roles.

6 Emily Blunt Was Almost Cast As Black Widow

Emily Blunt was Jon Favreau's first choice for the role of Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow. However, due to scheduling conflicts and contractual obligations, Blunt was forced out of the Iron Man 2 role to shoot Gulliver's Travels. She was later replaced by Scarlett Johansson.

"I don't think I would have been able to do a lot of projects that I've loved doing," Blunt told Indiewire in 2018. "You can't predict what's going to happen, what's going to catch fire and what's not, so if I make the choice for me, and not because I'm contracted, I think that's an exciting prospect."

5 Tom Hiddleston Came Close To Playing Thor

Before Loki, Tom Hiddleston originally auditioned to play Thor. After several months of rigorous training in preparation for the role, Hiddleston went so far as to screen test for the role with the character's long gold locks.

"I auditioned for the first Thor film 10 years ago in 2009,Hiddleston told Jimmy Fallon while appearing on The Tonight Show. “And I just thought I was auditioning for a movie. You know, an interesting part in an interesting movie. Back then, the Marvel Universe was—they’d just made Iron Man. And I thought, ‘I’ll have a go.’ I didn’t expect to be cast at all."

4 Chadwick Boseman Screen Tested For Drax

Chadwick Boseman's initial introduction to the MCU was in an audition for Guardians of the Galaxy, playing Drax the Destroyer. Boseman was brought in to screen test for the role, which he didn't land. However, Casting Director Sarah Halley Finn (who has cast every single film in the MCU) kept Boseman in mind for the role of Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War.

"It's about going and playing. I didn't think I was going to get it," Boseman told Jimmy Fallon during an appearance on The Tonight Show. "It's weird too, because it's a testament, I think, to Marvel, because after each film, you know, Ant-Man has a different tone and feeling, we didn't know what that was going to be, we didn't know what Guardians was going to be. So I didn't know what it was. I only had a few pages at that time. So it was just good to come in and play to see what they did with it."

3 Sebastian Stan Was The Front-Runner For Steve Rogers

Before entering the MCU as Bucky, Sebastian Stan was a front runner for the titular role in Captain America: The First Avenger. Kevin Feige wanted to cast Stan in the role, but Joel Silver (who had previously worked with Chris Evans) made his pitch to Feige for Chris Evans to play Steve Rogers – an opportunity Evans hesitated to take. “It’s a big commitment to do these Marvel movies,Evans recounts. “Initially, the offer was nine pictures, then it went to six. But six movies can last a really long time. My concern was the fact that this will be a life-changing experience and the following commitment would be more than I could handle. But that did not turn out to be the case. It was the best decision I ever made.

I was completely taken with [Bucky Barnes],Stan recounts. “I definitely want to be clear about this—I am extremely grateful I got this role and not the Captain America role. I looked at it like it was meant to be.

2 Joaquin Phoenix Was In Finale Negotiations To Play Doctor Strange

Before Benedict Cumberbatch became Doctor Strange, Joaquin Phoenix was originally in talks to don the Sorcerer Supreme's Cloak of Levitation. Phoenix would eventually turn down the offer to join the MCU, respectfully.

"I think [the MCU] make some great, fun movies," Phoenix told Sophie Monks Kaufman in an interview with Little White Lies. "I enjoy those movies sometimes, and I think they keep the industry going in some ways, so I don't have a problem with it at all. I think that everybody was, is... I'm trying to figure out how to say this most diplomatically, okay... I think everybody was really happy with how things turned out. All parties were satisfied."

1 Sam Rockwell Was The First Choice For Tony Stark

Jon Favreau's first choice for Tony Stark was Sam Rockwell. At the time, Marvel didn't want to cast Robert Downey Jr.—in fact, they flat out refused at one point. "Under no circumstances are we prepared to hire him for any price," Favreau recalled in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2008. Marvel caved and eventually gave the role to Downey Jr. at the behest of Favreau and Feige (who has since said Downey Jr.'s casting was the biggest risk Marvel Studios ever took). Although Rockwell didn't receive the part, he was later offered the role of Iron Man 2's antagonist, Justin Hammer.
