10 Things You Didn’t Know About Dragon Ball FighterZ Roster

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball has achieved a totemic status in the anime industry where practically everyone is aware of Goku, Vegeta, and the series’ powerful Saiyans. Dragon Ball’s supremacy in the anime and manga industries isn’t in jeopardy, but the action series has also made a major mark when it comes to video game adaptations. There are dozens of Dragon Ball games that reflect the evolving sensibilities and advancements of each gaming generation.

There are some exceptional Dragon Ball titles that have won over fans. However, Dragon Ball FighterZ has become a breakout game that many consider to be the apex of anime fighters. Dragon Ball FighterZ still has a lively audience, but there’s a lot about the game’s distinct roster of characters that deserves attention.

10 It Includes A New Character Created By Akira Toriyama

Dragon Ball video games are often great opportunities to celebrate the franchise’s lengthy history and the many creative characters that have appeared over the years. However, Dragon Ball games have increasingly taken ownership over original storylines and the introduction of new characters, some of which are even designed by Akira Toriyama. A video game-original character can occasionally be exciting enough to bring in a new crowd. Dragon Ball FighterZ features Android 21, a powerful female Android that’s also a part of the Majin race. Android 21 makes a strong impression and doesn’t feel like a throwaway character.

9 There Are More Than 40 Playable Characters

A difficult struggle that all fighting games face is determining a satisfying number of characters on their rosters. It’s deeply quaint to look back at the original Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter titles that didn’t even have ten fighters to select in comparison to how bloated the genre has become. Dragon Ball fighters have included increasingly large rosters, which isn’t always in the game’s favor. Dragon Ball FighterZ narrows their selections down to a satisfying two-dozen characters, 21 of which are available at the start and three that are unlockable. FighterZ adds 20 more characters through DLC, which brings its grand total to 44 playable characters.

8 There Are Assist Characters

There are slightly different gameplay mechanics across the different Dragon Ball video games and the approach that FighterZ takes incorporates assist characters into the fray. Assist fighters have become common in the fighting genre and are compromises that find ways to work in individuals who might not otherwise be in the spotlight.

Dragon Ball FighterZ has a complex assist fighter system where Videl, Androids 17 and 18, Adult Gohan, and Captain Ginyu function as support. FighterZ has grown so sophisticated that some of these assist characters can also function on their own — some of which even have their own assists.

7 There Are More Than Five Different Versions Of Goku

Variety is absolutely essential for any fighting game roster and the grand total of characters is less impressive than the distinct variety among the selections. Dragon Ball FighterZ current complete roster is just shy of 45 characters. However, criticisms have been launched at FighterZ for its copious representation of Goku, and to a lesser extent, Vegeta. FighterZ breaks up different Super Saiyan forms into different characters, which means that FighterZ includes five Goku variations. However, there's also Goku Black, not to mention two versions of Gogeta, Vegito, and four different Vegetas. That’s cumulatively over a dozen characters devoted to Goku and Vegeta variants.

6 There Have Been Three Seasons Of DLC Content

Dragon Ball FighterZ is still going strong after four years and entries in fighting series are able to keep the fandom entertained for significantly longer sessions due to DLC advancements and season passes that drip-feed new content over time. Dragon Ball FighterZ begins with a full package, but new content and updates have come through three seasons’ worth of “FighterZ Pass” additions. It’s unclear if a “FighterZ Pass 4” will bring even more characters into the fray, but at this point that seems likelier than a full-on Dragon Ball FighterZ 2.

5 It Covers Both Dragon Ball Super And GT

There are hundreds of episodes and decades of content to pull from in Dragon Ball games. Dragon Ball Super is the franchise’s current series and so it unsurprisingly has received lots of representation in FighterZ, as well as other Dragon Ball fighters. Dragon Ball GT remains a contentious chapter in the franchise, but it features a number of creative characters and transformations that bring a lot to the table.

Super and GT exist in separate canon, but FighterZ allows these worlds to coexist and it doesn't try to erase Dragon Ball GT's contributions. Baby, as well as Super Saiyan 4 versions of iconic characters, are present.

4 Android 21 Has Made Her Way Into Other Video Games

Plenty of Dragon Ball fighting games are extremely satisfying in the moment, but they ultimately become disposable once the next game is released and their events don’t play a factor in the larger scope of the series. Dragon Ball FighterZ’s original character, Android 21, is one of Toriyama’s more popular creations. The character has already transcended her origins and she’s shown up in other games like Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, and Super Dragon Ball Heroes. This is a big credit to FighterZ and Android 21 might even make her way into the anime.

3 It Includes Movie Characters

Dragon Ball Z’s ongoing success has led to the release of more than a dozen feature films, all of which pit Goku and company against exaggerated villains. For years there was enough Dragon Ball content that video games didn’t need to turn to characters from the movies, but these supporting figures have slowly become some of the most desired fighters to control. Dragon Ball FighterZ could have overlooked the franchise’s many films, but it’s appreciated that some of the bigger movie antagonists, like Cooler, Janemba, and two versions of Broly, make the cut.

2 The Story Is Set Between Dragon Ball Super's Universe 6 & Future Trunks Arcs

A hurdle that’s common in many Dragon Ball titles is where to set the story, especially when new elements and characters are involved. Dragon Ball FighterZ occurs during Dragon Ball Super’s canon and it wedges this conflict with Android 21 and Red Ribbon between the tournament against Universe 6 and Future Trunks’ arrival regarding Goku Black. FighterZ does its best to connect these dots and not create any inconsistencies, but the game and its characters are better off with FighterZ’s attempt to fit into the canon instead of just creating an alternate timeline.

1 Players Create Teams Of Three Characters

The fighting game genre has become progressively sophisticated. Different developers have keyed into certain aspects of the Dragon Ball series when it comes to their fighting adaptations and Arc System Works took much inspiration behind the iconic crossover fighting game, Marvel vs. Capcom. The DNA of Marvel vs. Capcom is all over FighterZ, but it’s perhaps most prominent through the game’s tag-team setup. FighterZ has the player select a team of three fighters that can be rotated through battle. This makes sense due to the nature of Dragon Ball’s battles and it allows more of the roster to be utilized.
