Why Peter Parker & Gwen Stacy Is the Spider-Verse's Strongest Romance

One of the constants in the Spider-Man movies is Peter Parker's journey will revolve around him finding true love. Sure, his ambitions to be the best superhero and protect his friends and family, were major parts of his character, but no matter what, he'll always be connected to a significant other. It led to Tobey Maguire's Peter, as well as the ones from The Amazing Spider-Man films and Marvel Cinematic Universe, making these women a priority. So, knowing what these relationships mean to the different incarnations of the character, let's decide which one is the live-action Spider-Verse's best romance.

Now, the recent love between the MCU's Peter and MJ is heartwarming, but it never really took full form. Homecoming had them as friends taking shots at each other before Far From Home explored how MJ discovered his identity. And apart from a couple of kisses, they didn't really feel like soulmates -- more like friends starting something, only to have it ripped away after the conclusion of No Way Home.

As for Maguire's Spidey and Kirsten Dunst's MJ, they got a lot of time over three movies, moving from high-school sweethearts to adults in the working world. Still, they gravitated towards other people, with MJ falling for Harry and John Jameson and Pete having a fling with Bryce Dallas Howard's Gwen Stacy. It created an atmosphere where they cared for each other but weren't actively loved. And this will-they, won't-they angle felt tedious, with the couple never really coming off like star-crossed lovers fated to be together.

These flaws weren't present for the Marc Webb reboot with Andrew Garfield's Peter and Emma Stone's Gwen, however. They spent The Amazing Spider-Man really falling for each other, setting up the best romance the character had seen on screen. Admittedly, it was a bit on the nose, but in two films, it became clear why Gwen was the center of Peter's world. To him, their bond wasn't melodramatic; it was something that made him want to stop the world and put the drama aside. They even had more nuanced hurdles to overcome than the other versions, with Peter staying away after Gwen's dad died, and Gwen questioning her future due to the trouble Spider-Man brought around.

Regardless of the issues, though, they never wandered from each other's orbit. Unfortunately, Gwen died when Peter tried to break her fall after an attack from Harry/Green Goblin, but even after he mourned her, she still positively impacted. He realized he had to live on in her memory, and while he did let darkness in, her memory ultimately helped him in the future. Because of what he experienced with Gwen, Garfield's Peter was able to help the other wall-crawlers to help fix the rift in No Way Home and remind himself that she would have wanted him to heal. Gwen may no longer be around, but she makes Peter an even bigger hero from the afterlife, which is an immortal love that will always stand the test of time.

To see how Gwen impacted Peter's life, Spider-Man: No Way Home goes on sale digitally on March 22 and arrives on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on April 12.
