Uncharted director Ruben Fleischer elaborates on how he plans on adapting Jak and Daxter, another iconic PlayStation franchise.
Speaking to CNET, Fleischer notes that bringing Jak and his ottsel sidekick to the big screen would be a challenge but he has ideas for how it could be done. "I've always wanted to do more of a space opera-type film. Jak and Daxter takes place in a different world, and it has certainly very different characters than our human form," explains Fleischer. Naughty Dog's action-platformer franchise is notable for including characters that feature a mixture of humanoid and fantastical features, such as Jak's long ears.
Despite Jak and Daxter's unique aesthetic, Fleischer believes that the game's writing and characters are strong enough to support a live-action adaptation. "... similar to Uncharted, what makes that game so special is the tone,"continued Fleischer. "And I think the buddy relationship is at the center of the game, so as long as you have the relationship and a great tone. While this incredible landscape isn't cinematic per se, you can really create a cool visual world with that."
While the film has yet to be announced, Fleischer isn't the first person to bring up the possibility of a Jak and Daxter movie. Uncharted star Tom Holland recently noted that he'd love to bring the franchise to cinemas albeit in an unexpected way. "I would play Jak," said Holland, "But I would make it A24, so it was really weird and dark. Yeah, I would do a really weird live-action version of Jak and Daxter."
Jak and Daxter is arguably one of the PlayStation 2's most popular and recognizable series. The first game in the franchise, subtitled The Precursor Legacy, took players on whimsical platforming romp around a variety of vibrant locations. While this proved popular among players, Jak II took on a much darker tone, modeling itself on the formula established by early Grand Theft Auto games. This industrial, grim aesthetic stuck around for Jak 3 and several spin-off games including Jak X and Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier.
While Fleischer's Jak and Daxter movie is likely still in very early production, fans of Naughty Dog's catalog of video games can check out the director's adaptation of Uncharted. The globe-trotting treasure hunt movie is now in cinemas.
