The Sims 4's Wedding Stories Expansion Banned in Russia Due to 'Gay Propaganda' Law

The latest expansion for the intensely popular game The Sims 4 is ostensibly banned in Russia due to a law that prohibits "gay propaganda."

Developer Maxis released an official blog update confirming My Wedding Stories will not be available in Russia. While the exact reasoning is not stated, it suggests that Russia's Article 6.13.1, a law that prohibits "propaganda or homosexualism among minors," is the cause of the ban. The upcoming expansion for The Sims 4 contains a story dedicated to the wedding of two female characters, Dom and Cam. Players will be able to organize and execute the couple's special day, going so far as to design their venue and outfits.

"As we moved through our development and brand storytelling process, we became aware that the way we wanted to tell Cam and Dom’s story would not be something we could freely share around the world," writes Maxis. "We are steadfast in upholding that commitment by shining a light on and celebrating stories like Dom and Cam’s, so we have made the decision to forgo the release of My Wedding Stories where our storytelling would be subject to changes because of federal laws." The studio concludes by explaining that due to its aforementioned principles, the expansion will not be sold in Russia.

While same-sex couples and marriages have been possible in The Sims franchise for some time now, the latest entry in the long-running series was the first to truly embrace the notion. It's currently unknown why Russia has a specific interest in blocking the content in My Wedding Stories, but fans speculate that it's because the expansion is actively marketing a same-sex relationship. Russian officials have yet to issue a statement on the situation.

Released in 2014, The Sims 4 is one of Electronic Arts' most popular games. Players design and create their own characters, guiding them through the course of their life from childhood through to old age. Beyond this roleplaying dynamic, the franchise is also known for its elaborate creation tools, allowing gamers to design intricate houses with minimal restrictions. The game has received plenty of post-launch updates and expansions, adding multiple dimensions to The Sims scenarios, including Cats & Dogs, City Living and Realm of Magic.

The Sims 4: My Wedding Stories launches on Feb. 17.
