Warning: The following contains spoilers from Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett “Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger,” streaming now on Disney+.
After last week’s The Mandalorian takeover, The Book of Boba Fett delivered another amazing episode. The series’ titular bounty hunter actually made an appearance in his own show --he didn’t speak, but that fits his character more anyway -- as preparation for the Pyke War intensified. On top of that, Luke, whose CGI face looked much better, trained with Grogu, and Ahsoka showed up too. As exciting as the Jedi stuff was, the most important thing for the coming finale revolved around a non-Force sensitive character.
Fans have been clamoring for a certain gunslinging Duros to appear in The Book of Boba Fett ever since the series started, and in “From the Desert Comes a Stranger,” it finally happened. The “stranger” in the episode’s title was indeed Cad Bane, but as Star Wars history has shown, Bane and Boba are anything but strangers.
As the episode opened, Din Djarin went and tried to make contact with Grogu, but for better or worse, Ahsoka dissuaded him. After that, Mando made good on his promise by teaming up with Boba Fett and his anti-Pyke squad, and he immediately tried to make himself useful. When Fennec Shand indicated their need for foot soldiers, Mando went to Freetown to recruit some of Cobb Vanth’s men. At first, Vanth was hesitant to offer any support, but as Mando left, the Marshall changed his tone.
That’s when a figure appeared in the distance -- walking slowly into town and wearing a long jacket and a big, recognizable hat. Vanth could immediately see what Bane was all about, but he still told the stranger Tatooine wouldn’t give the Pykes business. Naturally, Bane didn’t like that, and making it very clear that helping Boba Fett would be a bad idea, the bounty hunter claimed the territory for the Pyke Syndicate.
Since they could find no common ground, “hostile negotiations” began – Western style. Vanth was quick on the draw, but he was no match for Bane’s skill. Before the lawman of Freetown could even get off a shot, Bane hit him in the shoulder and peppered a deputy with blaster bolts.
Cad Bane and Boba Fett have a long, storied history. Bane started out as Jango Fett’s mentee, and after Master Windu killed Jango, Bane took Boba as a bounty-hunting apprentice as a way to pay back Jango. Eventually, the two of them had a falling out during a deleted scene in The Clone Wars, that may end up being canon after all. Either way, from his interactions with Cobb Vanth, it’s very clear that Bane cannot stand the thought of Boba Fett. So, with the series’ final episode on next week’s docket, Boba Fett will have to fend off an entire crime syndicate, but he will also have to content with his personal mentor-turned-nemesis.
Bane’s live action debut was definitely a success. He had the correct look, persona and tone. He might have been a little pale, but other than that, Star Wars hit the nail on the head with his first appearance. Hopefully, next week’s finale won’t be Bane’s final appearance. It would be a much better idea for him to survive so that he and Boba Fett can continue their feud into a second season.
