Snowpiercer: Layton's Scheme May Break the Train | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Snowpiercer Season 3, Episode 3, "The First Blow," now available on TNT.

One of the most deceitful arcs in Snowpiercer came at the start of the show when Melanie suggested Mr. Wilford was on board and she was acting as his eyes and ears, only for the series to reveal it was all a lie. Melanie had left him behind because he was a dangerous dictator and kept the ruse going to maintain order.

Her deceit helped Layton muster support and grow the rebellion so equality could reign supreme. But while Layton has returned to claim control of the Eternal Engine in Season 3, he's also copying Melanie's methods -- and that might end up costing him everything he fought so hard to gain.

When Melanie switched sides and joined Layton's army, the lower classes didn't take to her because they hated how she insulted their intelligence by propping Wilford up as a symbol. Whether she liked the boss or not, her deception kept an elitist atmosphere going that oppressed and killed many non-wealthy passengers. She viewed them as pawns on the chessboard -- some expendable to shape society and inch towards a utopia she felt they deserved. With no agency and no democracy, citizens felt invisible and like they were worthless in her eyes.

Layton should have learned from Melanie's experience and not make the same mistake, but that wasn't what happened in "The First Blow" when he and his crew stormed Big Alice, reconnecting it to Snowpiercer. He regained control of the entire locomotive but when new resistance leader Ruth asked him to forge a plan forward, Layton made that decision without anyone else's input. He wanted to take the train to the Horn of Africa, where Melanie's data had claimed there might be a hotspot called New Eden.

Layton agreed with Ruth that a vote about the plan should occur -- but he had Asha, a survivor they found in a bunker, lie and say they picked her up there to influence that vote. The lie left both Asha and Ruth shaken, and Layton has become the very manipulator he hated. His newly acquired fever visions are confusing him; he's sure the place exists, but if he turns out to be wrong, selling false hopes and dreams would make him an enemy forever.

Asha's experiencing trauma from her war-filled days and some of Layton's council might spill the truth about him soon, so he's going to have to monitor everyone in the rest of Season 3. If his plan fails or his direction comes out, that will provide Wilford and his remaining followers the ultimate trump card -- knowing that their savior lied to them just like the person they despised for so long.

See how Layton lies to his people in Season 3 of Snowpiercer, with new episodes airing Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on TNT.
