Luca: 10 Plot Holes Everyone Ignored | CBR

Luca is a movie about a sea monster named Luca Paguro, who meets another sea monster named Alberto Scorfano. Since Luca's parents want to send him to the deep, the two of them go to Portorosso with the intention of earning a Vespa and traveling the world.

The premise and message are both simple yet effective – everyone may accept people for who they are, but it is important to find the ones that will. There are a few plot holes in the film, inconsistencies created by the film's focus on certain messages and objects within scenes, and some character choices conflict with their beliefs.

10 Luca Paguro's Mother Didn't Stop Him When He Swam Away

When Luca's parents discovered that Luca was going to the surface with Alberto, they decided to send him to the bottom of the ocean to live with his uncle. He spent the entire conversation trying to defend the surface, stating that it wasn't nearly as dangerous as his mother assumed. He angrily swam away from his family, and for some reason, no one followed him. For someone so fearful of the surface and its dangers, it is hard to believe that Daniela would let Luca out of her sight. She even caught him sneaking away earlier, but never followed him or stopped him from meeting Alberto above water. If the surface was that dangerous, she would have stopped him before he even came close to it.

9 Ercole Visconti Was Allowed To Participate In The Race Despite Being Too Old

Ercole has won the Portorosso Cup multiple years in a row. When entering the race against the film's protagonists, the race's judge noticed that he was claiming to be 16 years old for the second year in the row. This means that he was already too old to participate in a race for children, and is at least 17 years old.

The moment he was introduced in the film, he was showboating and riding his Vespa. The adults of the town made it clear that they considered him to be a general nuisance. It is hard to believe that any of these people would be okay with a young adult competing against their children, let alone Ercole.

8 The Transformation Can Be Inconsistent

The transformation scenes can be a little inconsistent, since it is never really specified just how much water the characters need to be soaked in before they transform. When Luca's parents stepped out of the water, they quickly transformed, despite the fact that they weren't actually dry. The rain also triggered a partial transformation when it was drizzling, but Luca and Alberto immediately underwent a complete transformation when it was raining a bit harder. The rain technically wouldn't have gotten them completely wet in an instant.

7 Daniela Is An Expert At Moving On Land

Daniela knew little about the surface other than the fact that it was inhabited by humans. When she reached the surface, she didn't recognize her husband when he transformed, nor was she pleased by her own appearance. Despite the two having little to no experience of being on land, they were able to run and jump when Luca could barely do more than flop like a fish at first. She even showed off her skills in kicking a ball, knocking a bunch of kids into the fountain. Someone who so adamantly avoids the surface should not be able to adapt so quickly.

6 Luca's Parents Splashed So Many Children With Water

Luca's parents were eager to get him back into the ocean, but they had no idea which child he was because they had never seen his human form before. They decided that the most effective way of finding their son was to splash all of the children with water. This plan is greatly flawed, as they were in the middle of town. Exposing their son as a sea monster would only encourage people in town to take up arms and surround them. Rather than helping their son, they would have more than likely put him in far more danger if they had revealed him.

5 Luca's Parents Were Just Assumed To Be Volunteers

When Luca's parents turned the corner, they were stopped by a man who immediately assumed they were volunteers. He was more than happy to give a couple of strangers the job of handing out water to kids. The pair wasn't even looking at him, and they looked relatively confused when he did jump to conclusions. This was an extremely irresponsible choice, considering they were handing out things for kids to drink, but this scene seemed to primarily act as a fake-out tool to make audiences wonder whether Luca's parents would splash him or not.

4 No One Sees Luca During The Swimming Portion

In order to ensure a fair and even race, there were spectators that keep an eye out for anything odd. There were various men in boats who were keeping an eye on the swimmers and looking for sea monsters.

Luca, unable to swim without revealing his identity, walked across the bottom of the ocean while wearing a diving suit. No one would have been able to see him all the way down there, yet his participation was somehow considered to be completely valid. With this in mind, no one really had proof that he completed the full race.

3 No One Saw The Transformed Luca After He Was Tripped

After Luca had exited the ocean after completing the swimming portion of the race, Ercole maliciously tripped him. It made sense that he didn't see him since he looked the other way while he did it, but people in the crowd would have noticed Luca's green skin once his helmet popped off. Before the swimmers even entered the water, there was a decently sized crowd behind them. Luca managed to pop his head into his suit, and crawled under the food table, taking off the diving suit and drying off in a speed that shouldn't have been possible.

2 The Thrown Net Didn't Disrupt Other Racers

When Alberto's identity was exposed during the race, Ercole threw a net over him. A small crowd formed around them, blocking most of the path.  This would have made it difficult for racers to pass. No racers are seen passing Ercole while this is happening, despite the fact that there was a small group of racers right behind him. In a later shot, when Ercole is chasing a transformed Luca and Alberto, they pass by the same racers. This appears to be a bit of an inconsistency that exists because the movie intended to place the focus on the protagonists and the villain rather than the background characters.

1  Alberto Was Declared A Winner Despite Luca Being A Solo Entry

Before the race truly started, both Luca and Giulia were considered to be solo entries. Alberto was technically not a part of the race, and judging by his late arrival, Alberto only intended to hand Luca the umbrella rather than to personally compete in the race. Despite this, he and Luca were declared the winners of the race. If he was truly considered a member of the team, the tardiness of his entry would have likely disqualified the duo. Passing over this aspect, the declaration of them as winners was meant to be less of a literal interpretation, and was more meant to focus on how the people around them could still accept and care for them even if they weren't really human.
