Kingdom Hearts: 10 Harsh Realities Of Being Sora | CBR

Sora is the main protagonist of many of the Kingdom Hearts games. Fans have followed his journey since the very beginning, and they are eager to see where he'll go next, especially after the end of Kingdom Hearts III.

Despite Sora's likeability, being him would be far from easy. He's had to make his fair share of hard decisions and sacrifices to ensure everything is all right with all of the various worlds he's saved. Sora's also been put through the wringer in terms of both physical and mental trauma.

10 Sora's Always Been Separated From His Friends

From the start of his first adventure, Sora's been consistently separated from the two people who matter the most to him, Riku and Kairi. In the first game, the whole point of his adventure was reuniting with both of his friends-- Something he wouldn't succeed at until the end of his second adventure.

While he does get to hang out with Donald and Goofy for much of his adventures, the players can't shake the feeling that he still wishes his two best friends could tag along with him. Things are even worse when he's cut off from not only Riku and Kairi but everyone else he knows at the end of his most recent adventure.

9 The Fiercest Foes Always Come Sora's Way

Going around saving the various worlds is cool and all, but when that quest pits him against Titans, Heartless, and ancient keyblade masters, it's far from an easy job. Sora has to deal with these enemies and so many other challenging foes throughout his adventures.

Sora has had to fight Sephiroth on more than one occasion, and each encounter proved exceptionally difficult for the young hero. If the end of the secret episodes of the Kingdom Hearts III DLC and Kingdom Hearts Union X can be believed, Sora's still got harder fights ahead of him.

8 Losing Skills At The Start Of A New Adventure Would Be Annoying

At the start of a new adventure, Sora almost always loses all of the skills he had gained in his previous adventure. From a gameplay perspective, this makes sense, since Sora starting off too powerful would make the game too easy. Storywise, this is a real problem for Sora, who went from cutting buildings in half a few days ago to struggling to take out a few shadows. He eventually gets his lost strength back, along with some new skills, but the player always is left wondering what's going to take his skills away next time.

7 Everyone Likes To Belittle Him

For some reason, people constantly belittle Sora at every step of his journey. This can be seen as far back as the start of Sora's first adventure where Riku, in his competitiveness bullied Sora by making him do all the gathering work for the raft and taunted him constantly during their sparring matches.

This carried over throughout Sora's other adventures, where the villains mocked Sora by acting like he is worthless and weak. This belittling does come with some satisfying payback later on, though.

6 He Does The Hardest Work But Gets Next To No Acknowledgement For It

After stopping Xehanort's plans three times, the player might think that Sora gets some kind of big reward or acknowledgment for all that he does, but it never happens. If anyone's deserving of the title of keyblade master, it's him, for all that he's done to save the universe in this series.

Despite the fact that he has saved multiple universes and the fact that he unlocks abilities that only keyblade masters have-- like the power of waking-- he still isn't acknowledged as a true keyblade master. He did get one legitimate chance at the test, but that test was derailed by Xehanort's machinations, and Sora was depowered and failed the test.

5 Losing Memories Would Suck

This only happened to Sora once, but it couldn't have been a pleasant experience to live through. In the second game, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Sora ventures through the mysterious Castle Oblivion in search of his friends after being led along by a mysterious cloaked figure. This ended up being a setup by Marluxia of Organization XIII, who wanted to use Sora's power to overthrow the rest of the Organization. Sora still succeeded against Marluxia at the end of this adventure, but at the cost of most of his memories. In the end, he had to sleep for a full year while his memories were pieced back together.

4 Getting Trapped In An Alternate Reality Would Be Jarring

At the end of his most recent adventure, Sora paid the ultimate price for abusing the power of waking. He was kicked him out of the main reality of the Kingdom Hearts universe and placed in a world only understood as "unreality."

While not much is known about this world, other than its name--Quadratum-- Sora was met immediately with a confusing situation, running into Yozora from the Verum Rex game that Rex was playing in Toy Box and getting into a fight with him. Sora's fate after this fight is still unclear, and he's likely as confused as a lot of players were after completing this weird battle.

3 He's Constantly Targeted By Villains For Their Plans

Sora almost always finds himself with a target painted on his back because of his usefulness for various villains. This can be as simple as needing him to defeat more heartless to complete Kingdom Hearts, or as complex as needing him to complete an Organization XIII roster by giving Xigbar a fragment of Xehanort's heart.

Often, when Sora is the target of villains, unexpected help comes his way to turn the tide. But considering how often he's attacked, this doesn't help him feel any better about his situation, especially when he's stranded in a mysterious world he knows very little about.

2 The Other Versions Of Himself Are Confusing To Face

Xehanort isn't the only character who has multiple incarnations of himself running around. Sora also has several incarnations that are active at a given time. These incarnations of Sora usually are friendly and often develop identities of their own with a few exceptions. The most notable ones are his data variants, which he has two of--One from Coded, and another from The Limit Cut Episode of Kingdom Hearts III. The Coded version of Data-Sora developed his own identity but got reset at the end of the game. The other Data-Sora didn't seem to develop any kind of real personality. Either way, a meeting of Soras would be a confusing affair to attend.

1 He's Always Willing To Make Self-Sacrifices

The roughest reality of being Sora is always having to make the hardest choices, consistently sacrificing his happiness for others. The best example of this is the first major sacrifice he made in the series, in the first game.

Near the end of the game, Sora learns the truth about Kairi-- that her heart has been with him the entire time, and the only way he can free her is by using the keyblade that the Ansem-possessed Riku was wielding to free her's and the other princess's hearts.  He makes that choice, costing him his own body and leading to the creation of Roxas and Namine.
