Hi-Res Lightyear Images Introduce Buzz's Mortal Enemy: the Monstrous Zurg

A new series of images from Pixar's upcoming Lightyear shows the titular hero facing his worst enemy, the Evil Emperor Zurg.

The image shows the mortal enemies locked in battle as Buzz attacks Zurg with the Star-Command laser located on the wrist of his suit. Zurg towers over Buzz and continues to approach him, unfazed by the attack. Other photos focus on Space Ranger's Star Command crew, including his robot companion Sox, which takes the form of a cute, ginger cat. Another image shows Buzz getting a closer look at the unknown substance that powers his ship.

"Buzz’s world was always something I was excited about,” said director Angus MacLane. "In Toy Story, there seemed to be this incredible backstory to him being a Space Ranger that’s only touched upon, and I always wanted to explore that world further. So my Lightyear pitch was, 'What was the movie that Andy saw that made him want a Buzz Lightyear toy? I wanted to see that movie. And now I’m lucky enough to get to make it." MacLane has previously said that Lightyear was inspired by the great sci-fi flicks of the '70s and '80s and "is meant to be a love letter to film."

Buzz Lightyear first appeared as one of the toys in 1995's Toy Story and was voiced throughout the series of films by Tim Allen. As this is a different Buzz, the "hero that inspired the toy," the voice acting duties for the iconic Space Ranger have been taken over by Captain America's Chris Evans. The new voice of Buzz can be heard several times throughout the first full trailer for the movie.

MacLane spoke about his reasons behind casting Chris Evans for the role, saying that the actor was able to "find the humor amid moments of gravitas" that the character and story required. "He's a really good comedic actor, he's a really good dramatic actor, and he's really good at action," MacLane elaborated. After pitching the movie to Evans and working together, MacLane was pleased with how easy Evans was to work with and said the Captain America star was excited about the project. "It's such a breeze every time we work together," recalled MacLane. "Chris is such a great partner for the film, creatively and spiritually. He's just so excited and just really positive about it. He's exactly who you think he is. He's awesome!"

Lightyear blasts into theaters on June 17.
