Superman is one of pop culture's most iconic figures, and one would assume that movies based on him would be a rather easy proposition. Nothing could be farther from the truth, as decades of Superman movies have fallen flat for a variety of reasons. The most recent attempt, involving creating a new DCEU of related superhero movies a la the MCU, has been decidedly mixed with fans.
One of the main reasons is the stark differences between this version of the character and the comic version that most are used to. While the DCEU Superman has his fans, for many the changes are just too much.
10 Pa Kent Raising Him To Be Selfish Changed The Way He Approached The World
In the comics, Ma and Pa Kent created the bedrock of Superman in their adopted son Clark. They taught him to always help others, to use his powers to make the world a better place, and to be selfless. This influenced his future heroism immensely and made him into the icon that everyone looked up to.
DCEU Pa Kent took a very different method to raising his son, teaching him to hide his powers and not help others, even losing his life in order to teach his son a lesson. This completely changed the way Clark approached the world and heroism, making the DCEU a much different place.
9 He Spent Years Hiding From The World
In the comics, between graduating from high school and going to Metropolis, Clark Kent went to college and then traveled the world. He not only learned to be a good journalist during this time but also worked in secret to help those around him, using his powers to make a difference. Clark in the DCEU went another way as well.
There was no indication that he went to college, although he almost certainly did, but beyond that, he hid away from the world. He only used his powers when he absolutely had to and laid low, just like his father would have wanted.
8 He Was More Violent In General
One of the hallmarks of Superman is him only fighting as a last resort. He gives his foes every chance to surrender and only fights when he has to, doing his best to minimize damage to the surrounding civilians. He knows that fighting is something he has to do but he doesn't want to if he doesn't have to.
DCEU Superman's first inclination seems to be violence. While he has tried to talk to his foes, for the most part, he's very much a punch first, ask questions later kind of hero. He plays into his more violent aura several times and is a much more threatening presence in general.
7 His Relationship With Lois Is Much Different
In the comics, Lois Lane and Superman have one of the best relationships in comic history. They are equals in all things and Lois has saved the day when he couldn't. It's rare for two people to be so different and yet get along so well. They are completely complimentary, the perfect duo in all things.
The DCEU takes their relationship in a very different direction. One never gets the impression that he thinks of her as his equal and their relationship feels much more like a stereotypical relationship between a man and a woman, in lieu of their comic relationship, which is much more realistic and beneficial to the two of them.
6 Jimmy Olsen Is Completely Missing From His Life
Jimmy Olsen is one of Superman's closest allies. He's been a fixture of the Superman mythos since almost the beginning and has had amazing adventures of his own. Jimmy Olsen's status as Superman's pal has been both boon and bane to him. His relationship with Superman is one that grounds the Man of Steel while letting Jimmy be everything he can be.
In the DCEU, Jimmy Olsen was a CIA agent who is killed posing as Lois Lane's photographer. There's no indication of any relationship between him and Clark ever. This deprives DCEU fans of a valuable part of the Superman mythos.
5 His Death Is Very Different
"The Death Of Superman" is an iconic Superman story. Pitting Superman against the monster Doomsday, it's a battle he mostly fights entirely on his own. Beyond the Justice League getting trounced by Doomsday, Superman's entire fight against him is a one-man battle against a nearly unbeatable force. The whole point of the story is to show how far Superman will go to save the innocent.
His death in the DCEU has a similar point, which is good, but it's also entirely different. Doomsday is the reanimated corpse of Zod and Batman and Wonder Woman are there helping Superman. The whole thing recontextualizes their battle and changes it a lot.
4 His Costume Is Different
Superman has one of the most iconic costumes ever. Over the years, it's gone through mostly cosmetic changes with one of the biggest being the changes wrought by the New 52. While the DCEU borrowed a lot from the New 52, one thing that it didn't borrow was the costume. The DCEU costume is cosmetically different than the Kryptonian battle armor of the New 52.
It's also different from the classic costume, with darker colors and a lack of trunks. The difference in costume says a lot about Superman in the DCEU, especially the coloration, as it makes him into a darker figure.
3 He's Weaker Than In The Comics
Superman is one of the most powerful superheroes ever created. His powers have changed a lot over the years but he's always among the most potent heroes around. While this is also certainly the case in the DCEU, he's also weaker in general. There's no doubt he pulls his punches but there's no way he would have done so badly against Zod's Kryptonians, who had only been absorbing yellow sunlight for a fraction of the time, if he was as powerful as he was in the comics.
Movies often nerf more powerful characters, so it's not surprising this change was made. For some reason, it's believed weaker superheroes are better in movies and that affected Superman.
2 His Relationship With Batman Is Very Different
Batman and Superman in the comics are known as the World's Finest team. While they don't exactly get along perfectly, they are actually great friends and their relationship doesn't start out nearly as antagonistically as it does in the DCEU. While there have been many iterations of the beginning of their relationship, they at least approach each other as heroes instead of how they do in the DCEU.
Superman and Batman in the DCEU's relationship only got better after the much-maligned Martha moment. It was a massive departure made to make Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice work and many fans did not like it.
1 He's More Nonchalant About Killing
Zod is one of Superman's most iconic foes. He's the main villain of Man Of Steel and in the comics has battled Superman many times. In the post-Crisis DCU, he was from an alternate universe and killed everyone on that universe's Earth with Ursa and Non, so Superman executed him using Kryptonite. It's one of the only times Superman ever killed in the comics and he only did it because of the billions Zod killed.
DCEU Superman killed Zod for a good reason but he had other options at that moment, like flying him out of the area. The fact that he was so okay with killing was a massive change, especially when he had other options available.
