No Way Home's Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe Are Now Joint World Record Holders

The return of actors Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, respectively, in Spider-Man: No Way Home was a monumental moment for a multiverse of reasons -- and both Maguire and Dafoe can now add "World Record Holder" to their own lists of accolades.

Maguire and Dafoe were recently awarded the world record for the "longest career as a live-action Marvel character," according to Guinness World Records. With the actors' first appearances as their respective characters coming in 2002's Spider-Man, Maguire and Dafoe's return in 2021's No Way Home means both actors have played their respective roles across 19 years and 225 days. The same record was previously held by Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart, who played Wolverine and Professor X, respectively, for 16 years and 232 days between 2000's X-Men and 2017's Logan.

Maguire was recently interviewed about his return as an other-dimensional Spider-Man in No Way Home, with the actor letting slip that audiences may not have seen the last of the original big -screen Web-Slinger. "It was really about getting together with these people and revisiting what was part of my history," said Maguire. "There are personal things, too, which are kinda resolutions or a way to revisit and to get back into that and, I don't wanna say, like, 'close the chapter,' but 'revisit' and have certain resolutions and just join in this loving creative spirit."

Dafoe discussed his return as well, as the Green Goblin actor revealed what it took to make him suit up as the iconic villain nearly two decades later. "I'll come back if there's something really good," Dafoe said. "If it's just a cameo or a little tip of the hat, I'm not sure. If it's something substantial, 'Yeah.'" The actor also commented on the Goblin's costume change, which bears a closer resemblance to the character's comic book counterpart, with Dafoe explaining how criticism of the original 2002 costume led to his new look abandoning the molded helmet for a purple hood and a pair of goggles instead.

The introduction of the multiverse to the Marvel Cinematic Universe opens the door for more actors from previous Marvel films set outside the MCU to reprise their respective characters as well. As such, with the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness set to expand the multiverse even further, rumors have already begun to circulate about what other live-action Marvel characters will crossover into the MCU. In fact, not only has Maguire's Spider-Man been rumored to make an appearance in the film but a cameo by Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic has been rumored as well, with actor John Krasinski reportedly replacing Ioan Gruffudd and Miles Teller, who both previously played in character in both the 2005 and 2015 Fantastic Four films, respectively.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is in theaters now, while Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled release in theaters May 6.
