A Single-Player Version of The Witcher's Gwent Game Announced

CD Projekt Red is working on a new iteration of its popular card game Gwent that will prioritize the single-player experience.

As revealed by IGN, the new Gwent game is currently codenamed Project Golden Nekker and is set to launch in 2022. The mysterious title, which is currently helmed by CD Projekt Red's in-house team dedicated to the card game, will strive to deliver a "captivating single-player experience" that will differ from all the previously released versions of the game. Golden Nekker will not require players to own any other versions of Gwent and will be sold as a standalone title. A small collection of card art was also released, depicting a variety of creatures and environments including the titular shiny beast.

Paweł Burza, CD Projekt Red's Gwent Comms Lead, said, "It’s not another Witcher Tales [game] but something different. We’re aiming to provide a captivating single-player for players who prefer it over competitive multiplayer Gwent.” More information on the project will likely be revealed closer to the game's release.

Established in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as a series of side-quests, players were instantly drawn to Gwent's simple and engaging mechanics. While the game was an optional extra attached to an already massive experience, fans quickly began to request some kind of standalone title in the same vein as Hearthstone or Magic: The Gathering Arena. CD Projekt Red eventually announced Gwent: The Witcher Card Game in 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. This expanded version featured new deck archetypes and cards, earning praise from enthusiasts of the original game and the genre in general.

Fans of Gwent looking to experience the game in a manner that's non-competitive were eventually treated to Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. Incorporating the mechanics of the card game, this single-player spin-off acted as a campaign mode and allowed players step into the role of Queen Meve, the ruler of Lyria and Rivia. The ambitious story chronicles the fearsome leader as she embarks on a dangerous journey to strengthen her forces and build alliances so that she may reclaim the Northern territories that were taken from here. The game debuted to favorable reviews, with many praising its creative interpretation of Gwents systems alongside a surprisingly compelling narrative.

There's currently no word on when Project Golden Nekker will be formally revealed but fans should keep their eyes peeled for a 2022 announcement and launch.
