(SPOT.ph) Raise your hands if you love yourself some good ol' chocolate-plus-hazelnut action! The combo is most popularly known via the spread known as Nutella and the confection known as Ferrero Rocher. It's adored by the young and old alike, and manages to be as sophisticated as it is comforting and (just about) universally loved—really, you can't go wrong when the slight bitterness of chocolate as it melds with the nutty depth and natural creaminess of hazelnuts.

Though the tandem is best associated with Europe, there's no reason we Filipinos can't explore it ourselves and maybe even put our own spin on it. That's precisely what local chocolate purveyors 1919 Chocolate and True Chocolate PH are doing: The two brands have collaborated to come up with the must-try Hazelnut Milk Chocolate bar made with Filipino cacao, and whether you're a casual fan of sugary treats or a serious chocolate enthusiast it's well worth a try!

This chocolate-hazelnut bar by two renowned Filipino chocolate brands will sweep you off your feet:

1919 Chocolate and True Chocolate's Hazelnut Milk Chocolate (P265) highlights the chocolate-hazelnut pairing by way of a milk-chocolate bar that's studded with chopped roasted hazelnuts. By no means is this your typical commercialized chocolate bar, folks: It's made with single-estate heirloom cacao from 1919 Chocolate's estate farm in Malvar, Batangas, which lends a distinct and robust depth of flavor (it's on the dark side for milk chocolate!). Also in the mix are natural cocoa butter, which makes for a superb, silky-smooth melt; raw cane sugar for a slight toffeelike earthiness that complements the other flavors; and milk powder for added creaminess without overpowering the chocolate. And with the crunch and hint of saltiness from the hazelnuts joining in the taste-and-texture party, this bar is an overall balanced one that showcases how amazing and versatile Filipino cacao can be.

Love cookies-and-cream ice cream? You can try the flavor combo in a more contemporary (but equally fun) light with the Toasted White Chocolate with Crushed Cacao bar (P265), which pairs caramelized white chocolate's dulce de leche-esque profile with the subtle bitterness and crunch of fermented, roasted cacao nibs. And for a simpler (but no less stellar) bite that'll bring to mind chocolate digestives or even good ol' Fibisco Choco Crunchies, go for the Dark Chocolate Biscuit bars (P265)—a creamy-crisp confection of 70% dark chocolate and whole-wheat biscuits for a bittersweet, nutty bite.

You could very well call the Toasted White Chocolate with Crushed Cacao a more modern (but equally fun!) take on the cookies-and-cream combo.

1919 Chocolate is a family-owned, tree-to-bar chocolate brand makes chocolate with their own cacao from Malvar, Batangas. They've been recognized on a global scale and have even bagged international awards—including the recent Academy of Chocolate 2021, where they bagged their second silver award for their 62% Dark Chocolate and their first bronze award for their 70% Dark Chocolate.

Meanwhile, True Chocolate PH is a venture by chocolate maker and certified chocolate taster Treena Tecson, as a way of documenting her journey to learning more about chocolate (and even trying her hands at making it!). Tecson received her Level 1 and 2 Chocolate Tasting Certification from the International Institute of Chocolate and Cacao Tasting in 2019; at the moment, she's involved in cacao farming, post-harvest processing, and tree-to-bar chocolate making.
