(SPOT.ph) Despite good samaritans' efforts to take in stray cats and dogs, our streets are still filled with pets looking for their forever home. Some of them are impounded or, worse, put down when the local facility reaches capacity. The Quezon City government hopes to change this practice by opening an adoption center for neglected animals, where strays are "rehabilitated, trained, and put up for adoption," according to a press statement.

The Quezon City Animal Care and Adoption Center in Barangay Payatas can provide temporary homes to 60 animals in its 450-square-meter facility. It also has a surgery room for cats and dogs where they can be spayed and neutered; separate cages for sick animals, so they don't infect the healthy ones; and city veterinarians, who can attend to immediate medical needs. The city's Animal Welfare and Rehabilitation Program will also make sure that every stray gets the chance to go home to a loving family.

"Captured dogs and cats not claimed by their owners for at least three days will be up for adoption. With the help of the City Council, we are currently creating the homing and adoption policy for them," City Veterinarian Dr. Ana Marie Cabel said.

The Quezon City Veterinary Department also coordinated with animal welfare advocates to ensure that every step of the program follows the Animal Welfare Act (Republic Act 8485).
