(SPOT.ph) Is it any wonder Japanese food is such a hit with Filipinos? With its umami-rich character, it appeals to the local love for flavor—and paired with the emphasis on quality, it’s the kind of cuisine that pleases both casual food lovers and gourmands alike. If you’re looking for a taste of the Land of the Rising Sun right from home, you’ll be happy to know that plenty of local Japanese restaurants now allow you to order for delivery; better yet, a good number of them are also on delivery apps, so you can place your orders with just a few taps on your phone. Sen-Ryo
Hailing from Hong Kong, Sen-Ryo crafts up excellent sushi—the secret to which is the use of uber-fresh, premium ingredients. And yup, you can get their signature platters delivered for when the hankering strikes! You can’t go wrong with the Signature Nigiri Set (P1,500) with nigiri sushi of akami, botan shrimp, salmon, unagi, kinmedai and nodoguro fish, and seared salmon with cheese; there's also the Signature Sashimi Set (P2,900) for a more fish-focused bite. You can even sate the hankering for beef with their Wagyu Set (P1,150), a platter of assorted beef sushi: the Wagyu beef roll, Wagyu beef nigiri, and Wagyu foie gras nigiri. Ebi 10
One of our favorite tempura spots in the Metro, Ebi 10 fries up crackly-crisp versions of Jumbo Shrimp Tempura (P165/piece) with prawns that amazingly stay succulent and buttery. Don’t miss their other tempura either—including the Scallop Nori (P75/piece), Sweet Potato (P45/piece), and Hokkaido Oyster (P195)! While the tempura is the star, they’ve also got sushi, meaty mains, and rice dishes on their roster, so be sure to save room.

Yabu
Yabu, of course, hardly needs an introduction—they’re a Filipino favorite for their crisp-on-the-outside, juicy-on-the-inside katsu that have consistently made it to our top 10 lists over the years! Their Rosu Special Katsudon (P505) features just-fatty-enough katsu of pork loin, but if you’re more for a leaner cut you can go for the Hire Special Katsudon (P520) that uses pork tenderloin. Yabu also makes stellar katsu curry, employing their own hearty, slow-cooked curry sauce—don’t miss the Chicken Katsu Curry Set (P475).

Botejyu
When in Osaka, a plate of the savory pancake known as okonomiyaki is a must—and as far as restaurant chains go, no one pulls off the dish quite like Botejyu! They originate from the Japanese city itself and have been around since the '40s, so you know they’re doing something right. Their short yet ample okonomiyaki lineup includes the classic Pork Belly Oko (P310.50) and Seafood Mix Oko (P448.50). You can also try its soba-noodle stuffed version, dubbed the Okosoba, which they make in versions like the Bacon and Cheese (P511.75) and the Beef & Spring Onion (P552). In between bites of okonomiyaki and okosoba, you can also fill up on other Japanese classics like teppanyaki and rice bowls.

Ippudo
As far as Japanese food goes, it almost doesn’t get any more soul-soothing than a warm bowl of ramen. Ippudo happens to be one of our all-time favorite ramen spots, and you can get the experience right at home! Though their tamago isn't available when you're ordering for delivery, you still get the can't-fail combo of the restaurant's own rich, milky broth plus noodles and other ingredients. Their classic Shiromaru Supreme (P565)—a bowl with their original tonkotsu broth, thin noodles, a thick slice of chashu, and other ingredients—always hits the spot, or you can opt to go spicy with the Karaka Torched (P570) that’s got a more umami-rich broth with a touch of heat. Don’t forget their sidekicks; no meal here is complete without an order of their Pork Buns (P340/box of three) and/or Hakata-Style Gyoza (P250).

Marugame Udon
Udon is a kind of Japanese noodle that’s known for its thicker, chewier consistency that takes well to all kinds of other accompaniments. Japanese franchise Marugame Udon—who goes by Marugame Seimen in its country of origin—is pretty much the place to get your fix as they make their noodles fresh to order, and use it in a myriad of umami-rich ways. They’re best known for their Beef Ontama Bukkake Udon (starts at P235/regular), which has udon noodles in a soothing broth with stewed beef and an egg with a runny yolk. But you also don’t want to miss their other noodle dishes, like the ramen-esque Chicken Paitan Udon (starts at P225/regular) and the zippy Kimchi Yakiudon (starts at P255/regular).

Izakaya Sensu
What’s better than a warm pot of sukiyaki on a cold, rainy day? Izakaya Sensu whips up an excellent version of the dish dubbed the U.S. Beef Suki-Yaki Set (P875), and it’s the kind that totally soothes the soul. With a rich and flavorful broth holding tender slices of U.S. beef and other great-quality ingredients, this is just the dish you’d want to cozy up to. While you’re at it, don’t miss their other stellar dishes—from sushi and sashimi to rice balls to smoky-tender yakitori, they’ve got those hankerings covered.

Teppan Okochi
At Teppan Okochi, it’s all about teppanyaki—a.k.a. the Japanese dish where meats, veggies, and other ingredients are cooked over a flat iron griddle. Expect the use of premium and high-quality ingredients here; we’re talking Matsusaka Wagyu (P2,090), USDA Angus Ribeye Steak (P1,029), Oyster (P819), Jumbo Prawns (P924), and more! Outside their griddled eats, you’ll also find other classic dishes like soba noodles, rice toppings, and more.

Unakichi
Unagi, or freshwater eel, is one of those luxe Japanese dishes that’s well worth splurging on when you’re looking to treat yourself. Locally, Unakichi is known for their A+ eel game—unlike many other places that rely on the frozen stuff, they make theirs from scratch with eel sourced from a local farm that supplies to Japan. This makes for a leaner body than the fattier eel you might be used to, but also a fresher flavor that’s well worth savoring in its own right. You can choose between the fine or excellent eel, available shirayaki (just seasoned with salt) or kabayaki (glazed with a sweet-savory tare sauce). For the best value for money, you can also go for their rice bowls—the Unadon (P855), for example, features a half-sized fillet of grilled fine eel with rice.

Sensei
Modern sushi tends to get a bad rep, but there are definite exceptions that pull off the style really well. BF Homes spot Sensei is one of them, as they whip up flavor-bomb contemporary rolls with fresh seafood and other quality ingredients. We’re suckers for the spicy-umami Tuna & Crispy Scallop Dynaminte (P420), for one; meanwhile, the Tijuana (P460) introduces Latin-style flair into the mix with cilantro adding zest to the mix of sawara, tuna, mango, pickled green chili, Japanese cucumbers, aioli, and sesame seeds. Don’t miss their small plates and rice bowls; in particular, the Gyu Rosu (P780) is a standout with its glossy, juicy slices of beef striploin.
