Facebook Inc. Is Now Meta, and the Internet Is Not Amused

(SPOT.ph) After much hubbub on what Facebook's new name is, the Mark Zuckerberg-led company revealed on Friday morning, October 29 that it's now "Meta." And before you tell your friends to "Add you on Meta," the tech conglomerate clarified that it's only the parent company, Facebook, Inc., that's undergoing the overhaul.

"The metaverse is the next evolution of social connection. Our company’s vision is to help bring the metaverse to life, so we are changing our name to reflect our commitment to this future," said Meta's landing page.

"To reflect who we are and what we hope to build, I am proud to announce that starting today, our company is now Meta. Our mission remains the same, still about bringing people together. Our apps and their brands, they're not changing. And we're still the company that designs technology around the people. But now we have a new North Star: to help bring the metaverse to life," Zuckerberg said in a virtual conference.

This rebranding came after Facebook's series of scandals, most recently, leaked reams of internal studies showing that executives knew of their sites' potential for harm. The platform's critics have since been blaming the tech giant for spreading disinformation and hate in an effort to keep users engaged.

"Their meaningless name change should not distract from the investigation, regulation and real, independent oversight needed to hold Facebook accountable," an activist group called The Real Facebook Oversight Board said in a statement.
